Romney to announce running mate Saturday in Virginia

Mitt Romney’s campaign says the presumed Republican presidential nominee will announce his running mate Saturday morning in Norfolk, Va. Continue Reading

Paul Ryan’s guiding light is Ayn Rand as is Wall Street’s. Odd that conservatives embrace a philosophy of greed & atheism ala Rand. As De Touqueville said in his treatise “On America”, radical individualism will eventually destroy America. That is exactly what the “Objectivist” philosophy of Rand is about. It is also the view of people like ex fed chair Alan Greenspan who was an intimate follower of Rand. It is really a philosophy of neo Fascism or as some have said, “if Fascism comes to America it will arrive in the guise of a”pinstripe suit” thus “pinstripe fascism”.

The republicans have been taken over by the tea party mentality with lots of bucks. How many votes all this money gets them is yet to be seen. On paper there is no difference in the policies of Romney and Bush. Ryan supports the trickle down fairy dust policies that have given huge body blows to the middle and working class and put the fat cats on record breaking profits. Oh yeah-it just about put our economy in a melt down. Is that what we want….?

Ryan claims that happiness and individual liberty requires limited government. Of course, as a base-solidifying GOP theocrat, Ryan thinks those governmental limitations don’t extend to women and gays — whose bodies and lives should be regulated and controlled according to his dogma.
The paradox is that even US catholic bishops have taken Ryan to task over the likely impact of his policies on the poor.
Probable effect? Like Palin, Ryan will solidify a base that likely would have held its nose and voted for the GOP candidate anyway. The bad news (for Romney) is that the choice will probably send independents and moderates to Obama.

. Ryan embraces the extreme philosophy of Ayn Rand. Ryan heaped praise on Ayn Rand, a 20th-century libertarian novelist best known for her philosophy that centered on the idea that selfishness is “virtue.” Rand described altruism as “evil,” condemned Christianity for advocating compassion for the poor, viewed the feminist movement as “phony,” and called Arabs “almost totally primitive savages. Though he publicly rejected “her philosophy” in 2012, Ryan had professed himself a strong devotee. “The reason I got involved in public service, by and large, if I had to credit one thinker, one person, it would be Ayn Rand,” he said at a D.C. gathering honoring the author of “Atlas Shrugged” and “The Fountainhead.” “I give out ‘Atlas Shrugged’ as Christmas presents, and I make all my interns read it. Well… I try to make my interns read it.” Learn more about Ryan’s muse:

What wealth? We are reaching a critical mass here soon of where we will have less capital then we have debt. To put things into perspective
To put China’s ownership of U.S. debt in perspective, its holding of $1.2 trillion is even larger than the amount owned by American households. U.S. citizens hold only about $959 billion in U.S. debt, according to the Federal Reserve.
Other large foreign holders of U.S. debt include Japan, which owns $912 billion; the United Kingdom, which owns $347 billion; Brazil, which holds $211 billion; Taiwan, which holds $153 billion; and Hong Kong, which owns $122 billion.

Obama and prince Harry R have not had one budget bill vote in the Sanate in over 3 years. Senator Reed funds our government with continuing resolutions, so NO OVERSIGHT of our spending priorities exist! They just keep spending off the emergency budget. Big expensive funding to state and city government that we, they can not afford.Local governments need to take control of their spending especially in education, police and fire employment. I hope this returns to a local based tax so a little sanity can return to local government spending. After all, I do not want to bail out the state of California or any state that has spent excessively and resisted raising it own taxes, nor do I want to bail out year after year local governments who will not get their fiscal house in order! Ryan and Republicans have had the courage to put out a budget in the House and are being honest with the American People unlike Obama and company.

You have to use pundit speak to make a point? Yes….Is a wonder boy who wants to take from those who have the least so those that have the most can continue to amass more than they could ever spend…….Here’s an idea….A report out of London (I think that’s where it came from) that was investigating how many Britians were getting away without paying taxes by hiding it in off shore accounts like Mittens is doing had also found that the American Wealth in those banks could be as much as five or six “Trillion” of untaxed moneys. To top it off some of those “Too Big To Fail” banks that we bailed out have set up banks down there to hold this wealth for tax invaders so they too are a part of bilking America….How about letting them keep their holy as hell tax cut, but actually declare ALL THIER WEALTH to be taxed……If they can work and live in America under our freedoms then they damn well should be able to pay their fair share of the tax load….Then you and I wont be carrying such a huge load of the basics like law enforcement, Fire, Public safety, Helping the poor (Who are often the elderly now days……Enough of this Ryan nonsense of attacking those with the least to allow those with the most to get by with more than they can ever possibly even spend

This will be the most important election of. my lifetime, perhaps in the history of our country because it is between the dependent socialist system versus the freedom of capitalism. This rise of power of socialism is the allaince of government workers and the welfare class. The irony here is government unions have received so much more than most tax payers the last 20 years that we can not afford their benefits much longer. Let local and state governments deal with the problem they have created!!

UC Law School statement: The Law School has received many media requests about Barack Obama, especially about his status as “Senior Lecturer.” From 1992 until his election to the U.S. Senate in 2004, Barack Obama served as a professor in the Law School. He was a Lecturer from 1992 to 1996. He was a Senior Lecturer from 1996 to 2004, during which time he taught three courses per year. Senior Lecturers are considered to be members of the Law School faculty and are regarded as professors, although not full-time or tenure-track. The title of Senior Lecturer is distinct from the title of Lecturer, which signifies adjunct status. Like Obama, each of the Law School’s Senior Lecturers have high-demand careers in politics or public service, which prevent full-time teaching. Several times during his 12 years as a professor in the Law School, Obama was invited to join the faculty in a full-time tenure-track position, but he declined.

The worst of this current partisanship was introduced by Karl Rove. He was the one that injected venomous negative ads into the Republican primary when Bush was running against McCain. He was relentless, and unfortunately, he was successful and everybody noticed. Subsequently, it got even worse with the Swiftboaters in the 2004 election and now with all limits gone from campaign finance, it has become a mud slinging fest. Bad feelings remain after the election is over and you get increasing partisanship. I hope that we will stop listening to all the negative ads and just vote for who we think will do the best job. We only have one president at a time and that person deserves the support of all Americans. It used to be patriotic to support our President, but some factions these days think they have a right to undermine him.

Not quite…..I agree that most main stream media is really doing a poor job really covering the news, but that’s because the fools are spending too much time trying to do Opinion pieces like fox. Fox used to be an actual news channel, but they gave up on that several years ago when they started to move to mostly opinion programming. Now days about the only time there’s actual news is when it’s too big to be ignored. Otherwise it’s all anti anything on the left…all the time.
If the FCC had the nads they’d do something like Canada does where any inaccurate reporting has to have a public retraction within a certain period of time or there’s a fine…..fox tried to get it overturned in Canada because Murdock wanted a fox Canada, but the wise people of Canada came out in force and insisted they didn’t change it. We’d lose fox America with such regs.
Hell! Since the airwaves are public, then there should be a certain percentage of content that’s actual news (85 maybe) for a outlet to be able to actually call itself a news channel. Fox should be listed as an “Opinion Channel” …..Not news

Spearman, you have a number of posts tying Ryan to Wall Street and corporate America. The irony is that in both the 2008 and 2010 elections Wall Street, corporations and their executives contributed more to democrats than republicans. The democrats have done a fantastic job of tying republicans to corporate America when the truth is that both major parties tow the line for those interests. You also blame republicans for the economic woes caused by excesses of big banks while ignoring the fact that those excesses would not have been possible without the repeal of Glass-Steagall during the Clinton presidency; Glass-Steagall was enacted following the 1929 stock market crash for the purpose of keeping banks out of the speculative high risk markets. Clinton reaped the benefit of the repeal during his presidency and the country ultimately paid when the speculation by banks caught up. By the way, Clinton was also the president who cut the capital gains tax rate. I think Clinton was a good president, but don’t forget he cut taxes and spending.

Spearman, so if Clinton was “forced” to repeal Glass-Steagall it is only logical that the economic boom of the Clinton years was attributable to the Republicans as well. But I am certain that in your view any bad Clinton policies were forced by the Republicans but all of the good Clinton policies were somehow slipped by without their participation. The more obvious explanation is the Republican controlled congress along with president Clinton successfully cut taxes and spending, something neither part has been able to do since. The economic policies during the Clinton years were the result of cooperation without extreme positions by either major party, something that is currently absent from both parties. While I don’t particularly care for the extreme positions taken by the Republican party, I at least find them to be honest in stating their intention. In contrast, I do not find President Obama at al credible; it scares me to believe that he was actually caught on tape explaining a foreign policy position to a Russian diplomat and remarking that they just needed to wait until after the election. The country needs a democrat willing to cut spending and taxes like Clinton or a Republican willing to abandon the silly positions on social issues like Reagan.

Romney/Ryan/Rand’s Libertarian & neo-liberal economic strategies are basically synonymous. That is the economic mindset of austerity for the many & business as usual for the 5% or the 15 million that own 60% of the economy. It is a large Ponzi scheme to keep the 94% off balance by continuing to hide the illigitimacy of the current oligarchic arrangement. By another name it is rule by the elites or fascism, i.e. corporate rule. Anyone who believes in “social Darwinism” is by definition a fascist. It has become stylish & acceptable as a social system to believe that accd. to “radical individualism” people deserve what they get. “I’ve got mine you get yours” is our motto & we sweeten it up & call it “personal responsibility”. Hogwash! The economic system is structured to maintain the private ownership of the means of production thereby keeping the majority without its needs being met. What conservatives understand is that every time the masses make progress economically an economic downturn needs to be initiated. It is actually the ruling class going on strike to reverse the gains made by the quasi democratic processes by taking back the gains made by the people.

Poverty? Define povery.
It is not poverty that worries people like you, it is ecomomic inequality.
“Why We Can’t End Poverty In America: It’s The Ignorance
The reason we can’t end poverty in America is not because the country isn’t rich enough to do that: it is rather because of the ignorance of those who would end poverty in America. Peter Edelman has an Op/Ed in the New York Times which shows this to horrific effect. And what’s really worrying is that Edelman is supposedly one of the experts on how we ought to reduce poverty.
One point that has to be made about poverty right at the start: to all intents and purposes America, like all other industrialised nations, has abolished poverty. What we have traditionally called poverty that is. Proper destitution, people dying of starvation in the streets from the lack of the wherewithal to purchase food. Absent drug or mental problems this simply does not happen any more. The reason being that we’ve all had those industrial revolutions and the societies are rich enough that we make sure such doesn’t happen. Sure, different places have different ways of doing it, some more governmental and tax based than others, but that basic job of feeding the starving, clothing the naked and sheltering the homeless does get done.”

Most of the people with grand ideas about poverty have had little to no contact with those who are in that condition. I read on these boards all the time idealog that comes from impressions from afar. Judgements like that is akin to someone describing a long journey that they’ve observed from a helicopter and trying to express what it’s like being on the road……If they’d get down on the road and mingle a while they’d most likely have a far different outlook one way or other

Are you serious? Watch Ryan get chewed up and spit out. Did you know he only wrote 2 bills that made it into law in his entire almost 14 year House carreer? One was to rename a post office and the other was to amend a tax on arrows, that’s right, arrows. What a stellar carreer it’s been. I’m sure he’s batting about even with Palin on qualifications.

Good point…
people should contrast his record with that of Barack Obama in the Senate.

Ancient history my friend. You don’t get to run the Ryan of today against the Obama before he was elected president. Obama stacks up pretty well with his record against Romney who’s on run the Olympics for a few months and made money by picking the bones of bankrupt companies. Romeny showed his true self when he alienated everybody including the Prime Minister of England and the Mayor of London when he was on his world tour.

Did Barack have a single bill he sponsored or sponsored that became law? Zero! Zero on both counts! Barack needs to run on his pathetic record instead of lying about his opposition!

This is 2012 not 2008. You have to face facts and one of those facts is that Romney didn’t do anybody in the Repubican Party any favors by picking Ryan for VP.

Charlie, I believe in traditional marriage defined as 2 people who love each other! Not only reserved for a man and a woman but any 2 people who are in love. No one is attacking marriage they are only shedding outdated bigatory thinking

Charlie, I don’t see the government running my daily life. I choose where I work, how I get there, what I do after work, and generally everything I do in my life. Government would not be involved with buisness if buisness truly could regulate itself. Look at wallstreet and the gulf oil spill as 2 examples. Bush sending troops into 2 wars across the world was more of a threat to national security than anything obama has done. Obama actually is bringing our troops back to our soil where they belong!

Realist, your opinion only! It is a shame you do not want to talk about entitlement reform, debt control, education reform, public service union reform, or any of the other important issues we face in the US. President has had his chance and he has failed at responsible leadership. His problem is his lack of business education and experience. We have states on the verge of bankruptsy and multiple cities already bankrupt. States like California will not raise their state or property taxes on individuals. IT WOULD BE UNFAIR THAT WE CONTINUE TO FUND THEIR IRRESPONSIBILITY WITH FEDERAL DOLLARS! His community organizing taught him how to divide America and he has done a great job at that. Paul Ryan will focus this election on the difficult decisions we need to make as Americans. Our oppinions are important but lets spend equal time on these important issues. I think you realize your man has not done a very good job!

Do you go through all of your life with such blinders on? All these ill going on in the states are largely the cause by your damn fox party in the house. All these cuts that were forced to approve funding the budget had to come from somplace….Your boys wouldn’t allow the extreme wealthy to kick in even what they kicked in before your Bush put up two war fronts and lessoned the intake. You boys held a gun to the heads of the Dems and basically forced these cuts so there’d be no money to “Trickle down” to the states like in the past…..Your side is so damn rediculus…You do the damage and then spin it to make it the Dems……Like your boys were just innocent bystandars or something…..Pull you head out of the arse end of fox and you might actually see what’s going on….Man…If you don’t start looking for real news sources you’ll just continue spouting misinformation….

johnb, does the below sound like it is fair to treat the POTUS as just a commuity organizer?
President Obama graduated from Columbia Univ. with a degree in political science in 1982. He worked in the financial sector in NYC for a year but decided to find more meaningful work in Chicago as a community organizer @ age 23 in 1985. He did that for 3 yrs. until he was 26.
Faced with the frustrations of community organizing, after those 3 years in Chicago, Obama decided to apply his skills in the wider world. He entered Harvard Law School in 1988, became the first African-American president of Harvard Law Review in 1990, and earned his law degree in 1991. He returned to Chicago to work as a civil rights lawyer and teach at the University of Chicago Law School. He eventually won a seat in the Illinois State Senate and was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2004.

The Romney/Ryan jobs program is welfare for the rich investors in the defense industry. The US spends more on providing the world with weapons than all other countries put together. Now that’s a jobs program! Rethuglican’s need to live up to their name I guess.

Have you thought of the Social Security issue in these terms? Who spent the SS Fund money that has been received from contributions by workers ever since the inception of SS. The SS fund would be in the black indefinitely, but the money has just disappeared! This in my mind is the real crime of the century. Just exactly how much has our out of control military / industrial complex robbed from the SS fund!!!! What is the problem? Remember that fifty two percent of every tax dollar is allocated to the military! This my friends is nuts!!! And needs to change; problem is – who has the courage to take on these criminals!!!

My 52% came from the fact that of all discretionary spending 52-54% is defense related. see below.
The U.S. Department of Defense budget accounted in fiscal year 2010 for about 19% of the United States federal budgeted expenditures and 28% of estimated tax revenues. Including non-DOD expenditures, defense spending was approximately 28–38% of budgeted expenditures and 42–57% of estimated tax revenues. According to the Congressional Budget Office, defense spending grew 9% annually on average from fiscal year 2000–2009.
Because of constitutional limitations, military funding is appropriated in a discretionary spending account. (Such accounts permit government planners to have more flexibility to change spending each year, as opposed to mandatory spending accounts that mandate spending on programs in accordance with the law, outside of the budgetary process.) In recent years, discretionary spending as a whole has amounted to about one-third of total federal outlays. Department of Defense spending’s share of DISCRETIONARY spending was 50.5% in 2003, and has risen to between 53% and 54% in recent years.[31]
