Mary Thom, New Ulm, Minn., letter: Gay marriage backers obscure arguments
August 9, 2012 at 9:39 am in Grand Forks Herald
In order to divert attention away from the legitimate points brought up by those who support one man/one woman marriage, those who want to change the definition of marriage to include homosexuals often bring up other matters that obscure the point. Continue Reading

I had a whole long diatribe written and then realized that if people truly think like you do, then my comments probably won’t change your mind. It’s pretty sad that I have to raise my kids in a society where others are so self-righteous that they must devote such large amounts of energy toward worrying about others and the way they live their lives. How do I explain this to them? It’s just silly – why don’t you worry more about living your own life in a morally just manner and let others handle their own. We aren’t talking about murderers here folks – it’s just regular people trying to be allowed to be themselves.

Marriage, at it roots, is a legal contract. That’s it, a legal contract. All the homosexuals want are the same rights as the rest of us. To be able to designate their special someone to share in all aspects of their lives. It is the legal part they are being denied, that the rest of us automatically have. For tax purposes, visiting in hospitals and make the treatment decisions, when their best friend is unable to, as with ‘normal’ married couples. Homosexuality is far from a choice. Our sexual ordination is pretty much hard wired at birth. No amount of therapy or wishful thinking is going to change that. Denying homosexuals their rights is as much discrimination as denying someone their rights because of skin color, religion, gender and a whole long list of things ignorant, bigoted people keep trying to do.
Give everyone the same rights, regardless of the gender of their preferred mates. That is all they are asking for.

The divorce lobby is behind this. They are licking their chops at the prospect of a whole new crop of potential victims.

Mary, the reason these other points are mentioned is that for those who are working to ‘protect’ marriage, there are a host of already existing problems that affect marriage that could be addressed.
We politely suggest those problems be dealt with before you take on the threat of gay marriage.
Incidentally, we have a number of states that have legalized same gender marriage, as well as nearly a year of the defeat of DADT under our belts. There’s got to be lots of stats being generated about the harm to society that’s happened in that time that could bolster your argument against gay marriage.
Yeah, that’s what i thought.
