The reason the young buck was doing what he was doing is because he was in rut. They fight other males for the females. It is serious aggression against any and all in their territory. Hormones blind them to reality. They attack their reflections in door glass, glass store fronts and anything that presents them with a visage of a competing young male buck. But they will attack anything or anyone they believe are challenging them. In that hormonal state they have literally a one track mind. They are a hammer and everything else is a nail.

I thought rut started in November…?
Ah, well – regardless – this was a really well written piece. I enjoyed it very much.

Doug, I have never seen the rut start in August, and I’m pretty sure there was another reason he attacked. If it were October I might believe it, not in August. Even then I’ve seen plenty of bucks in the wild when in rut, and never had one approach.
