ND likely to debate medical marijuana proposal

North Dakota voters are likely to have a chance this fall to decide whether they should allow people to use marijuana for pain relief. Backers of medical marijuana turned in petitions with about 20,000 signatures to Secretary of State Al Jaeger’s office on Monday. Continue Reading

It really doesn’t seem to me to make any sense that those fighting cancer and taking chemo don’t have the option to use medical marijuana, which by all accounts helps some who really aren’t helped by other things.

I think the initiative has been abused. I prefer to have the Legislature pass the laws. However, I don’t see the Legislature ever approving the use of marijuana for medical purposes, and I don’t see any reason that it shouldn’t be available. All sorts of drugs are used by prescription that are illegal to otherwise use. Sometimes people just need to do the right thing. Maybe there are reasons to oppose it. If so, I’d like to hear rational reasons.

Only if it is dispensed by licensed pharmacists. Allowing these “head shops” to be set up has been a disaster in other states.

Licensed pharmacists do not distribute medical marijuana in ANY of the 17 states (and DC) that currently offer it. There are no “head shops” dispensing. There are dispensaries, where you need to present a state issued CARD to receive the medicine. Pharmacies are not equipped, nor are pharmacists currently trained to understand the nuances of all forms of marijuana and its consumption. I dont think any states have declared their dispensary systems a “disaster”. There have been some issues regarding how easily people get ‘prescriptions’ in certain states….but no real issues surrounding the dispensaries themselves.
