Our view: Give Anderson a run at Cravaack
August 5, 2012 at 7:00 pm in Duluth News Tribune
While his nationally known opponents have been raking in cash and collecting endorsements from all over, Duluth’s Jeff Anderson has been quietly and steadily one parade and one conversation at a time building support among those he’d actually represent: residents and others in Minnesota’s 8th Congressional District.

“Anderson has the leadership skills, sound ideas and Northland values”, interesting.
Example used, president of Duluth City Council, which is a job just given through rotation not necessarily through skill.
Northland values, of which none of his are a reflection on 95% of the northland, just an acceptance of some others.
Sound ideas, on which seeing those few he chose to forward while on city council were more of his personal social agenda than for the betterment of Duluth citizens as a whole and our values.
Truth of the opinion is he has been in sale for years and is still tiring to sell his bag of goods.

Surprise surprise, the far lefts house organ the DNT, promotes the far left Anderson. I suspect, as in the past, at every opportunity Anderson will “promote the gay agenda”. Is that truly representative of the majority of the people in his district?

He has taken a page from the Cravaack campaign, one parade, one conversation at a time. It was a winning stategy for Cravaack, I can see why he is doing it. But he is no Chip Cravaack. Cravaack in his 2 years has spoken or given everyone a chance to speak to him more than Oberstar did in his last 20. The DFL label is not a for sure win anymore in the 8th district. People have decided to vote for sensiblity rather than party affliations. Anderson vs. Cravaack , my money is on Cravaack.

A vote for Cravaack is a vote for the Republican party, since they stick together on virtually all issues. Compromise and bipartisan politics are terms from the past.

Found an interesting web site that shows how often our members of congress (both the Senate and House) vote with their party.
If you don’t like to click on links in posts….just google “party line votes by politicians us house” and click on the first item.
http://projects.washingtonpost.com/congress/112/house/members/
It appears that Chip votes with his party less than the average US House member does…..92%.
Looking things over, it appears the US House as a whole is a much more partisian place than the US Senate is. The Republicans in the house appear to be more likely to vote their party line than the democrats do….but in the Senate it’s reversed where the democrats appear to be much more likely to vote their party line than the republicans do.

Sounds like if we want government to start functioning again, a LOT of those Senate Dumbocrats need to be replaced with people who understand the concept of negotiation and compromise.

I don’t care for Jeff’s ultra liberal ways, but one thing now is certainly clear. If indeed Rick Nolans said “(It) sounds like an awful lot of money until you get to Washington, where it’s chump change. That (amount) falls off the table during meetings.” to the DNT editorial board about a quarter billion dollar range mining school then Nolan needs to be instantly put on the bottom of every DFLers list of choices. Yes it is chump change when you compare it to $16 trillion in debt, but to just keep adding to the problem is lunacy at best. Even DFLers should be able to surmise that enough is enough already and Anderson’s stance on high speed rail should have disqualified him a long time ago.

The DFL is not offering anything new. Dangle the same old government pork projects to get people to vote for them. Oberstar made a good living doing that all those years.

You’re right on one point Don.
Nolan’s quote:
“(It) sounds like an awful lot of money until you get to Washington, where it’s chump change. That (amount) falls off the table during meetings.”
We weren’t teleported into this fiscal mess we’re in…..we walked in one small step at a time. With an attitude like Nolan’s….we’re not likely to start walking out any time soon.
I can’t imagine a poorer reason to support anything….we should do it because it’s only a very small amount of money compared to the total budget ??? Wow….it’s only one phrase he uttered, but it tells me a whole lot about his view of things and for me personally is enough to disqualify him from my support.
If something is a good idea, it’s a good idea no matter the cost, if something is a bad idea, it’s a bad idea no matter how little and insignificant the cost. If we want to be able to support the truly good ideas that are very costly….we need to stop supporting other things without a critical eye just because they are “chump change” as Nolan says.
250 million may indeed be “chump change” in Washington …..but I’d rather have a Representative who doesn’t buy into that way of thinking.

What thousand job development are you talking about? Is this another pork barrel proposal that I’ve missed? What about the thousand job Gogebic taconite project? A private company wants to spend its money to create jobs in our area. And the enviromental wing of the democratic party shuts it down.

The Mining center? Are you kidding? Like that has a chance to happen under Nolan?? Even Oberstar couldn’t pull something like that off. Look how much seniority Jimmy had in congress after 18 terms. Where do you think the money comes from to do something like that? “That money belongs in the pockets of wall street investors” ??? It comes from all of us. Lets try to get private companies to invest in our area.

I guess I just didn’t do my research. Now that I have… It turns out that the center wouldn’t increase the deficit at all, since it would be balanced with cuts to Lockheed Martin funding. Ultimately, it would mean building “1 or 2 fewer planes per year.”
And it would add closer to 5,000 jobs, not 1,000. Boy is my face red.
If you want to sit around & wait for some investor to come along & solve all our problems, you’re free to do that. The Bush Tax cuts put massive amounts of money into the pockets of investors for over a decade, and the end result has been fewer jobs, richer investors.

Anderson hasn’t shown any ability to raise funds but has a legitimate shot because carpetbagger Clark moved here only a year ago & ‘leases’ a condo & 68 year old Nolan wants to go back to Washington after a 30 year hiatus.
Anderson’s elective record consists of only one term on the Duluth City Council He’s an old-school, far-left candidate beholden to labor unions and is not representative of this new district with a large contingent of southern conservative voters. From Anderson’s website – ‘Jeff has been a tireless advocate for families, public safety workers, labor unions…’. Organizations supported include The International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), Stonewall ( LGBT caucus of DFL Party).
On health care Anderson states ‘while the Affordable Care Act may not be perfect, it is a step in the right direction.’

If you understand Nolan’s comment what hes saying is to put something so small in comparison with what they are spending on in Washington is chump change. If it helps to bring the amount of jobs said and helps to ensure mining is done safely why not do it! As for being able to talk to Chippy whenever you want? Think about the other day and what happened! Also? when is he going to come up north of Cambridge for a town hall meeting? According to his so called mobile office schedule you can go down south to Taylors Falls, Braham etc. and meet with his staff, did the people elect his staff or him? As for these “mobile offices his staff are working out of?”? are they in the Leased govt vehicle we are paying for?
Frankly hes done nothing for the area except play crony politics in Washington! As for his so called residence in Cambridge? there are people that will swear that he sleeps on an air mattress in his office in Duluth yet his family has a sole residence out east, so I guess they conservs can throw out the Clark moving here conspiracy theory at least she lives here!

DULUTH, MN)…St. Louis County Commissioner Steve O’Neil, from east Duluth, today announced he is endorsing Rick Nolan for Congress in the 8th District. Steve made the following statement:
“Rick Nolan has impressed me since this campaign began. I have been impressed by the commitment we share to finding affordable housing and decent medical care for all our citizens. But mostly, I am impressed with his approach to public service. Rick has run a positive, issue-oriented campaign from the beginning. He inspires people to public service and reminds me of Paul Wellstone in many ways. I urge everyone in Duluth to support Rick on Tuesday, August 14.”
In accepting Steve’s endorsement, Rick Nolan said the following: “I am truly honored and humbled to receive Steve’s endorsement. Steve is a legend in Duluth for his commitment to the homeless and is the recipient of numerous public service awards. He approaches public service with a deep conscience and a desire to help those most in need. I respect Steve immensely, and look forward to working together with him to address the needs of the people in Duluth and throughout the 8th District.”
Rick Nolan is the DFL-endorsed candidate for 8th District Congress. The primary election is Tuesday, August 14.
