DNR officers shoot nuisance yearling bear near Ely
August 3, 2012 at 12:46 pm in Duluth News Tribune
The bear had been collared in July by Lynn Rogers of the Wildlife Research Institute in Ely, but it wasn’t one of the well-known bears tracked by Rogers and other researchers or followed by the public on Internet webcams.

I would much rather see some “wildlife conservation officers” get shot.

“Residents in that township for years have fed bears, Rogers said, and because of that, there are few problems with them.”
Well, in this case it was a problem. Unfortunate that humans took away this bear’s fear of humans because the bear paid the ultimate price.

You’re right Mike ! So often we humans cause the problem but not thinking about the results of what we’re doing….but it’s almost always the animals that pay the ultimate price. Death in this case.
It’s sort of like when people are near Lake Superior and feed the Seagulls…. they themselves and others complain that their cars get pooped on with all the Seagulls….well duh ! Animals always come around if you offer them food or your have food available and unprotected….you can’t blame them for that. It’s not rocket science to figure it out. We move into their habitat and have food around that they can smell and then wonder why they come around looking for it.
Heck….people do that too. Nothing like a free meal to have a line of people out the door and onto the sidewalk.

The DNR is trying to stay way out ahead of this one in the media. They are already blaming. The mis-information they are sending about bears is very sad. I’m sure this little bear was scared. Black Bears don’t snarl, that’s movie stuff. Maybe the DNR officer was scared. Could have turned out very differently. I have encountered Black Bears…nothing to fear, just need to know the signs.
