Sanford merger, plans could affect JRMC’s future

The merger of two health care systems with facilities in Jamestown could have lasting effects on care in the area and the local hospital’s future.
On July 3, Sanford Health and Medcenter One officially merged after getting approval from Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem. Over the next year Medcenter One will make the transition to the Sanford name. Continue Reading

Terry, the article states that JRMC would have reason to be worried if Sanford constructed a surgical center in Jamestown. This is a result of the Medcenter Oner/Sanford merger, and has zero to do with the beautiful new facility Sanford will be constructing in Fargo.
I think the fact of the matter is that Sanford wants to run the hospital in Jamestown, and wants to purchase the JRMC. It will be interesting to see what kind of leverage Sanford can/will use now that they have merged with Medcenter One.

Terry, there is nothing hidden…
“Jamestown is a crucial piece of the North Dakota health care landscape. Its central location and easy access from I-94 make Jamestown an important hub for services.” – Quote from Sanford COO. The fact is Sanford may be looking expand treatment in Jamestown as well as building a new hospital in Fargo.
>It’s obvious just from the fact that Fargo has probably 40 or 50 times the hospital beds that Jamestown has that people travel to Fargo for health services.
Not necessarily true. What is true is that the larger facilities in Fargo have more specialists, so if necessary you can receive specialized care that JRMC cannot provide.
People that travel to Fargo for care already have the brand new Essentia facility, I don’t think the new Sanford facility will have much impact drawing more people from Jamestown. Also, the new JRMC is clearly a very nice, new facility and having an orthopedic surgeon in town makes it more likely that elderly and non-mobile people will stand in town for joint replacement, treatment, ect. Sanford realizes this and wants to pick up the business.

Also, terry, I am neither a resident of Jamestown or the state of North Dakota for that matter, so please don’t mask your attack at me by labeling it “…a typical Jamestown response..” and “You people…”

It will be interesting to see what happens. Sanford appears to have pretty deep pockets and I’m guessing it’s a matter of when, and not if, they’ll buy it.
