Walmart store impact on Cottage Grove traffic to get closer look

Planning commission concerns have prompted Cottage Grove to undertake deeper study of the potential traffic impacts a proposed Walmart store would have on surrounding roadways. Continue Reading

I listed two concerns at the meeting. One the moving of traffic coming from South 61 to cross two lanes to make a left. The other, which isn’t addressed in the story, is Jamaica and Point Douglas. There wasn’t an impact study done on that area and between 5 and 7 p.m. at night, that is going to be a nightmare – especially for those trying to leave Wal-Mart and get onto Jamaica. Those people will get fed up and then turn left onto Point Douglas and head out through Keats, which will further increase the congestion there. I don’t doubt from a pure numbers standpoint (not taking anything into consideration) that the roads can handle the traffic. But, I highly doubt from a practical standpoint that at the busiest times of the day the roads will be sufficient.

I’d assume the county 19 overpass would require a major overhaul as well as east point douglas by the Cottage View, Menards & Red Barn. I don’t know the reason why they never connected east point douglas along 61 back in the day when they planned out the commercial in that area. It seems CG shot themselves in the foot for future development in regard to traffic management and ease of access.
