NEW TOWN, N.D. (AP) The Three Affiliated Tribes is asking the federal government to hold in trust a 9,300-acre ranch so it goes off local tax rolls.

I’m surprised that this is only coming up now. I remember when the ranch was sold in 1999 to the Tribe and this was a concern at that time. We certainly are at a time when the US Government or Tribal governments should not be expanding ownership of land. It would maybe be different if this land was adjacent to the reservation boundary, but it is not. The Tribe decided to purchase this acreage outside the boundaries and should not be allowed to remove the land from the tax rolls. They should be treated as any other land owner in Dunn and Mckenzie County. I hope the counties stick to it, but unfortunately they may be fighting a losing battle when dealing with the BIA.
