Called the Mayor’s Urban Neighborhood Initiative, the program began five years ago in the Near North Neighborhood just north of downtown. It kicks off today in the Near Southside with an open house at 6:30 p.m. in the Link Community Center at 300 Cherry St. Continue Reading

I have a question….Other than about a decade living in other spots around ND I grew up in Forks and have lived here most of my life. Until a couple years ago I had never heard the terms Near South side, or Near North Side referred to these neighborhoods. Where and when did these come from? Then again I never hear the term “Grand Cities” before either, but I know tha was just a catchy phrase for tourism and such…

In fact I lived in the Near Southside for about 13 years before moving Near Stamart…..And I never heard anyone referring to it as that….

This is all an attempt on the part of the GF rah-rah group to characterize the place as something more than a little town on the edge of the prarie, by using terminology reminiscent of that applied to Chicago.

Thank you, Gene. Perfect answer. Yet another “manufactured” brand-name that seems pleasing enough to say, but doesn’t actually add anything to the conversation. A feel-good load of crap inflicted on us by folks well-versed in “marketing”.
In short, a shameful propaganda tool; a tool designed to help extract the maximum possible amount of money from “all of us” in order to subsidize the worst of the property owners in a limited area. That it has also encouraged some private (rather than public) money is probably just a happy unintended consequence.

i am all for the city to help with the improvment of run down propertys… but i really dont understand this whole thing… maybe the city should make the property owners clean up there act or get condemed… The propertys around downtown grandforks look bad… not all of them.. but alot do.. most are rentals where the landlords are only going to do so much. witch isnt mucht.. if my property looks bad i have to clean it up and pay for it myself.. im getting sick of our city leaders spending our tax dollars on this type of thing.
