And even when Jamestown is not the cheapest, it is the only one of the three airports to offer free parking, which costs $5.50 per day in Fargo and $7 per day in Bismarck.

Free parking means nothing to me. I’d rather drive to Bismarck or Fargo and fly in a bigger plane with bathrooms and flight attendants. Add in that I can do some shopping and it’s a simple decision.

Point of clarification–the fare improvement for through flights did not come as a result of a subsidy, as flights from Minneapolis to elsewhere are unsubsidized Delta flights. Only the Great Lakes flights to Minneapolis are subsidized through the Essential Air Service program, and there were never complaints about those fares. As far as I know they have not changed since the changeover.
EAS isn’t even mentioned in the article and would not be on topic.

I recently booked a trip to California for a trip later this year and tickets from Bismarck were $260/ea cheaper. That should pay for a few days of parking.

Having flown into/out of all of these airports multiple times, it is significantly more convenient to fly into/out of Jamestown. However, the prices tend to be much more expensive compared to Bismarck or Fargo especially if you shop around multiple days instead of “a week” or “a month” out, but perhaps it is improving.
In the end, the flight price makes the decision rather easy – one way or the other.
