Some kids think detergent pods are candy
July 30, 2012 at 2:30 am in Grand Forks Herald
As the number and variety of single-dose laundry and dish detergent packets continue to grow, so do the hazards they present to small children, some of whom are eating them. Continue Reading

If you teach your child what they are, they won’t mess with it. My 4 year old loves to put the detergent pods in the washing machine, and the dish washing pods in the dishwasher. She has never thought they were candy. She was taught at an early age that chemicals are dangerous and to not mess with them.

You’d think the taste would be a clue to the kids also.
What ever happened to the green Yuk! ‘smiley’ that signified poison? Bring it back. The kids easily recognized that as something to leave alone.

If the kids are trained to keep their hands OFF of everything that doesn’t belong to them…there’s no problem to “fix” with some dumb sticker.
Can’t put stupid stickers on EVERYTHING that could possibly be hazardous.
Child-proofing the house is wrong. House-proofing the child is the correct method.
Hot debate. What do you think?

Manufactures can easily put the Poison smiley on their products. Every little bit helps.
Having raised kids, I know that no child is fully house proof. None. They are curious about the world around them. That smiley, they can understand.
Stupid? It sound like you have some growing up to do yourself.

They still have power cords on TV’s.
Kids used to pull on them and have the tv fall on top of them.
Generally only happened once.
At some point you have to accept that your kid is going to learn things from mistakes he/she makes.
However, as a parent it is YOUR responsibility to ensure thye have no access to poison chemicals and harmful ingredients etc…
I love the Pods, they save me a fortune as i was one of those chronic overuser of the liquid stuff (cap full plus some)
Havent tried to eat any yet though…..

Have you ever seen any of Titus comedy specials? He had one bit where he was going to put a fork into an electrical socket. His father and uncle were watching so when the uncle asked, “Aren’t you going to stop him?” His father said…”Just watch” So he stuck it into the socket and got knocked on his butt, and when he looked up at his father crying his father said something lik, “Do you believe me now that you don’t put anything in those sockets?” Titus claims that was the first and last time he ever did….A bit rough, but like you said….You only need the lesson once…

This reminds me of the time my brother-in-law borrowed our Sawzall. When he returned it the screw that holds the blade in place was missing. When my husband asked him why…he said his son lost it when he was playing around with it. The kid was seven years old. Our son would never have been allowed near it. His kid was playing with it. The safety issue, not to mention the cost of the tool, would be a factor to most of us, but not some people.

When I was young my beloved sister covered a shaved bar of soap with chocolate syrup, told me it was a Milky Way and gave it to me as a gift of appreciation. She also poured some Joy dish soap into a Orange Crush soda bottle and again I was suckered into another sinister joke. I learned, but boy, that laundry packet looks awfully inviting.

Well I really know nothing about these new soap things, but I do know what Lava Soap taste like. I went to St. Mikes in the first grade……The old nun believed in washing your mouth out with soap for basically saying anything she didn’t like….Didn’t actually have to be swearing. Somehow I ended up having that big green gritty bar of soap crammed in my mouth more than anyone else in my class….That was about 52 years ago, and to this day I just have to think of the name and I get an immeadiate recall of that great taste……Oh…That was my first and last year in Catholic school…..They actually said I was too “Opinionated” back then……In first grade….Go figure huh?
