My word! You can’t call a creek an ethnic slur
July 28, 2012 at 7:00 pm in Duluth News Tribune
Robin Washington column: Rather than repeat it, let’s just call it an ethnic slur that rhymes with bagel. And even if it’s self-applied, it’s still derogatory. So it was more than a little surprising to find it in a Lake County Sheriff’s Office report recently.

It wasn’t that many years ago when you could find hot dago sandwiches on just about any menu in Mn.
I never had an Italian friend tell me that hurt their feelings.

I stillmake them- and serve them to even Italian friends who also call them Dagos- maybe it is an Iron Range thing- We all have nicknames that no one is insulted by- just the outsiders who don’t understand and Iry to make someting of it- I could type in many of these terms used everyday among Rangers- it is just accepted. If you are reading this and are a Ranger- I know you are thinking the ones I am. There seems to be a resurgence of these names- maybe to hold on to traditions generations in the making and fading fast.

Yes, Tansey, I grew up on the range. Most of us had immigrant grandparents ( except the Indian kids of course).
It was very ethnically relaxed. I saw plenty of fist fights over girls and hockey games but I never once saw a fight because someone called someone a dago. No one cared. It was part of the culture.

I understand that rhyming doesnt always have to be at the end of a word, but really to say that it rhymes with Bagel is quite the stretch.

What?? It shocks you that the DNT like to create news instead of reporting it? I’m not saying we are without race issues in Duluth. But how many articles do they need to do on theis subject? Maybe try to mix it up a bit and try covering something else.

Mr can not report the News, he tries continually to make racial News. Hell when in my youth I lived next to “Dago Mike”, he wore his name proudly. And as for WOPS, (immigrants coming to Ellis Island having no papers) With Out Papers… Racism, Bull…!!! Let’s not forget the Finlanders, Pollocks, Irish.. DNT is a Racist tabloid…!

Right on Bob. Robin Washington is showing his racist feelings and is ruining what used to a moderately passable newspaper. Now due to leftist and racist views the DNT is barely good enough to wrap fish guts in (it used to be better to wrap fish guts in before they downsized the size of the paper used).

I read on-line only the few articles (like this one) that catch my eye due to the absurdity of that which is written by the authors. The DNT is now nothing more than the “house organ” for the wacko liberal left here in Duluth and it continually amazes me at what gets published as news. And it should surprise me (but doesn’t) at what doesn’t get published because articles in other on-line papers reveal that censorship of news is alive and well at the DNT, presumably because it doesn’t fit the local libs agenda. The DNT is worthless as a real source of news.

He should read the entire list of names of lakes in Minnesota if he really wants to be offended. I can’t list them because I’m under heavy moderation right now and they are on the list of no no words. Simple names like the nickname for Richard for one could get me into trouble.

It’s alright because only certain groups are taught to feel they are victims. They are taught that the deck is stacked against them so they might as well not even try. That is the “Victim” mindset and it discourages even the most minor efforts at self improvement. Most other groups (like Scandenavians, Dagos and hunkies for example) have a backbone and they stand tall in the light of adversity and hardship (and ridicule) and they work hard to overcome the hardships and adversity. No cowering, playing the blame game or becoming the ward of someone else is allowed by their heritage. Keep standing tall Mike.

First generation refugees excelling in the work place and education system, I wonder how this is to happen in a racist society..?

The bald face truth of the matter is that words, and names too, only have power over you if you let them. Don’t let anyone rent space inside your head. But people do. That is why racism still exists. It’s because people give weight to the words of complete strangers instead of having the self esteem to blow it off. Why would anyone care what someone else thinks?

Ulysses’ mission appears to be to bring the white supremacist point of view into every conversation that he deems relevant.
I’m still not sure if he’s an actual, card carrying member of some white pride group, or just a confused shut-in who has come to the same conclusions on his own. He often appears to have no idea that he’s repeating textbook racist stereotypes.

Levi: Do you really believe that I care what you think? I read only those articles that interest me because of the leftist propaganda pumped out by the DNT. The DNT skews actual news to suit their, and the leftist, agenda and I comment on select articles just to show that there are some of us willing to call them out on their BS.
Hot debate. What do you think?

It’s too bad you never learned to read Levi. Other peoples opinions are of interest to me. Whether they agree or disagree with me, I respect their opinions. What I did say was it is you and your thoughts that I don’t give a rats arse about. You continually show your “poor me, I’m a victim” and your racist views that I find extremely repulsive.

im white and make plenty of money to not be on any entitlement programs..l HAVE NEVER SAID ANYTHING RACIST ON HERE OR A WHOA IS ME/POOR ME STATEMENT..(I.unlike you however i have empathy and can put myself in other peoples shoes and i am cognizant of the fact that racism and sexism still benefits me as a middle class white male despite things like affirmative action that yes i do believe are wrong. You are mad because people want you to admit that being a white male has its advantages they dont tell you they are going to take them away they just say be aware that you have had them.

Ulysses isn’t actually arguing with you, he’s arguing with a make-believe liberal he heard about on Rush Limbaugh. Don’t expect him to address anything you say, that’s not why he’s here.

Does anybody remember long ago when we kids each put a foot in a circle and used that “Eeeny, meenne, minenny, moe …” rhyme to, what was it now, chose sides for a game or something? I wonder if kids still use that same rhyme now or if it has changed? My guess is that it’s not used anymore.
