Small city planned near Lake Burgen

A development large enough to accommodate a small city is moving ahead in southeast Alexandria across from the new high school near Lake Burgen.
Not everyone is welcoming it with open arms. Residents living near the lake are worried about the magnitude of the development and its impact on the lake.
LBR Properties is pursuing the development known as Stonemanor. It consists of two parcels, totaling 54 acres, and is located east of Pioneer Road (Highway 106). Continue Reading

So let me get this straight. Is there really a need for enough apartment capacity to house 10% of Alexandria’s population on 54 acres? This just doesn’t sound like a very sound idea. I hope there isn’t a TIF incentive involved.

And how are they going to find enough people live there I am sure it will be expensive rent and with this town’s low paying jobs I can’t see it!! More people I know are leaving Alexandria due to no jobs or the lack of good paying jobs!! This is not needed at all!!!

So, who is LBR Properties? Amazing how this project pops up so soon after the school gets the green light.
I expect 90% of the tenants to be subsidized and Alexandria’s Finest will need to station a patrol car there 24/7

Talk about overkill! The worst part of this is going to be all the added traffic around the new school. Hopefully the city doesn’t screw it up.

Rick, you mean Alexandria don’t pay very good? That’s a surprise (enter sarcasm here). Scott, might as well add one more place in the community for the rif- raf to hang out (enter sarcasm here as well).

The 7/16 Planning Commission minutes are posted on the city website. It’s in interesting read if you’ve got a few minutes. One thing I found interesting is that they, “don’t see a lot of families moving into them”, which makes the location adjacent the new high school even more interesting. It just seems to me to be a classic case of a solution aching to find a problem.

I feel that I must disagree with the most of you, I feel that there is a real need in Alexandria for more affordable housing. If you look around this city, there is plenty of housing for the people that have moved here to make this their retirement home, there is almost enough housing for the students that come here every fall to make this town their home for the 9 months they will be here a year. There just is not enough housing to meet the needs of the lower-middle class that live and work here. As far as the low paying jobs in this town i feel that that a truly wrong statement. there are very good paying jobs in this town for anyone who is willing to get an education and put forth an effort to make something of themselves, granted the inexperienced and uneducated people are going to be working for close to minimum wage, but that is the same pretty much anywhere you go. With decent housing comes more businesses and more opportunities for better jobs for more people.

Housing doesn’t drive the need for jobs. Jobs drive the need for housing. Play Sim-City once, zone all the residential you want, but until you put in a factory or two, no one moves in.

Just like with the new school, everyone wants the town to grow. Can anyone tell me what they are missing? Are they looking for more shopping, more crime, more traffic, more banks,WHAT ?

I just saw two kids held at gun point by DCS by the airport. If only they had a “affordable” place to lay their head they wouldn’t be such little criminals.
