Dayton: Did Washington nix FEMA aid that Chicago OKed?
July 26, 2012 at 10:52 am in Duluth News Tribune
Gov. Mark Dayton said Thursday that he understands the Chicago Federal Emergency Management Agency office recommended that Minnesota get individual relief for those affected by June northeastern Minnesota floods, but FEMA headquarters in Washington rejected the application, likely out of budget concerns.

So let me get this straight. This area voted overwhelmingly for Obama, Dayton supports Obama, but when the time comes for the Obama administration to help northeastern Minnesota, they have no money available. What about the billions of money he gave to the now dead green energy projects? If I had been an Obama supporter and my house flooded out, I’d be mad as hell right now. And if Dayton doesn’t publicly criticize his President over this decision, I’d be mad as hell at him too.

If this would have happened under Bush they would have had mass protests. They would have even blamed the flood itself on Bush. You don’t hear much talk about Obama and the lack of support for our area. So much for his “Yes we can!”

And I almost forgot about Mayor Donnie Ness. Wasn’t he Chairman of the Obama campaign in northeastern Minnesota? I guess it’s OK that Obama stiffed residents of Duluth. The hell with the residents, we have to circle our wagons to protect Obama. After all, with you, Obama comes first, the residents need only take a number.

I’m sorry, but when southern MN flooded, the comments on this news site were highly critical of those people who did not have flood insurance. Well, why didn’t YOUR area have flood insurance? I know, I know, you aren’t in a known “flood plain”, right? Actually, you have a past history of flooding in this area, so those are not valid excuses. Take personal responsibility for yourselves. That is the true American way, correct?
Still, I sincerely hope your area gets the help they so urgently need, just as those in southern MN got help when the unthinkable happened to them.

Oh noes! A Senator representing his constituents announces that he’s secured $15,000,000 in federal money to be spent on his constituents!
I’m just curious, but what exactly is it that you think a Senator is supposed to do for the people he represents? Because it seems to me that he’s doing exactly what he was elected to do. . .
And I have no idea what possible connection you’re trying to make here. FEMA’s budget for this year was set last year for the fiscal year of October 2011 – September 2012. The article you link too is for a program that is to be included in the 2013 budget.
Unless you’re saying that a Senator has the power to retroactively, and arbitrarily increase specific funding to certain programs on a budget that was passed last year?
In so far as I know, I’m pretty sure that’s outside the scope and power of a Senator. I’d have to check, but I;m pretty sure even the President can’t do that. . .

How does that differ from any Congress since Clinton?
Deficit spending isn’t new. Nor is it even really an issue so long as it is kept in line and as a percentage of annual GDP growth. That’s basic Macroeconomics.
Of course, you could applaud Senator Reid by helping lower the deficit by voting for the Health Care law. . . But I know you won’t believe that, so here’s the Associated Press article about it:
“Budget office: Obama’s health law reduces deficit”
http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_HEALTH_CARE_OVERHAUL_COSTS?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT
And just in case that isn’t enough, here is the Congressional Budget Office’s Health Care page, full of fun facts and data, and analysis of impact of the ACA:
http://www.cbo.gov/topics/health-care
And if you’re too afraid of clicking on links because they may contain mal-ware (and why you would use the internet without a virus protection program is beyond me), you can very easily go to teh googles and type in:
“Obama’s health law reduces deficit”
You can even copy (crtl-c) and paste (crtl-v) that right into the search box. No typing involved!

That’s a wonderfully constructed argument, with logical conclusions drawn from actual fact and real data. Your citation list is impressive, containing the names of many well respected and reputable authors, and you do a marvelous job of summarizing their analysis, both succinctly and elegantly.
I have to admit Dave, your argument has really made me think twice about about my earlier conclusions. . .

So. . . When Bush was being blasted for FEMA’s lack of response after Katrina, it was “Well, FEMA operates independently from the President, so you can’t hold Bush accountable.”
But, now that Obama is President somehow everything FEMA does is a direct result of his Presidency.
That’s some mighty interesting logic there. . .
If you want to criticize the politics involved, I would suggest perhaps a comparison between the Democratic response here in Minnesota, and the Republican-Tea-Party-GOP response cross the bay in Wisconsin.
And then ask yourself. . . Which state would you rather be living in at the moment, and why.
It is also curious that typical Right-leaning respondents here, who espouse a small government, Libertarian, Capitalistic, every-man-for-himself attitude, are so quick to jump on the bandwagon asking for a handout, when they have no one but themselves to blame for not being prepared.
So, let me see here. . . Those without insurance, are stuck with bills they can’t afford, due to circumstances beyond their control, and now it’s the governments responsibility to help them out. . .
Hmmm. I feel as if we’ve had this conversation before, and if I recall, weren’t the Republicans on the other side of the fence on that one?
Wonder what changed.

Point of order:
States declare disasters, thus allowing FEMA and Femabucks to come into play.
Bush did everything but kiss Landrieu’s ring to get her to declare NOLA et a disaster areas ahead of time so that FEMA could get the ball rolling. She chose not to. Then the collective three IQ points between her & Ray “CHAH-CUH-LUHHHT CITY” Nagin delayed every other possible response, including using the large amount of buses to get people outta Dodge.
Now fast forward to 2012….
The areas affected by these floods HAVE been declared disaster areas, which then means FEMA and Femabucks should be coming in to help those in need. If the closest FEEBLE, I mean, FEMA office is saying money needs to come in, why are a bunch of pencil pushing pudlickers in DC saying no?

According the the “pencil pushing pudlickers” in DC, not enough homes were effected by the flood. Pretty sure that was in one of the articles the News Tribune has about this situation.
Oh wait. . . It was in this article! Ha, silly me. Expecting people to read stuff and stuffs. . .
“When it rejected the request, FEMA did not mention budget issues, but said not enough homes were damaged to qualify for aid.”
This part too is of interest:
“FEMA documents indicate that individual assistance relies on factors such as concentration of damage, deaths and injuries, special populations such as the elderly being affected, what private organizations are doing to help and insurance coverage.”
So you see. . . This is entirely a FEMA decision. Obama had nothing to do with it.
I know that’s disheartening to many people who want to blame Obama for everything, but that’s just not the case. Not that it will stop them.
I just wish that instead of posting asinine illogicisms, they’d instead just post “I hate Obama”. Reading such drivel just makes my head hurt.
But that’s just me. I know. How dare I suggest that we should clutter our political discourse with things like facts, and data, truth and logic. It’s so much easier to prove your side is right, when you can just make &*() up.

Perhaps they’ll even resort to doing a public records search on me so they can refute my argument by crucifying me for speeding tickets.
Because nothing says “I don’t have a leg to stand on” quite like resorting to irrelevant character assassinations.

They gave them shelter in FEMA trailers but to the best of my knowledge didn’t rebuild their homes for them. That is the function of insurance. When there was a major disaster in our town there was no assistance to rebuild for private property owners, only government assets.

You have to understand that Bush was being accused of racism by the democrats during the Katrina debacle so it’s no surprise the goodies were handed out freely. I’m just saying it’s not necessarily standard procedure.
