Hopefully she’ll be nominated for “Nanny of the Month” by the Reason Foundation and be immortalized with a long line of sanctimonious ‘banners’ across the nation. Nice smile though, I’m sure she means well.

The smoking issue is about workplace safety — no “nannying” involved. If you are concerned about people affecting your lives then you really should appreciate this and stop making such childish and irrelevant comments.

Justasec, I prefer the market to make the decisions voluntarily, instead of using the threat of the state to force people into choices that the state, and nanny-staters such as yourself, wishes us to make. So if you do not like smoking, don’t go to work for a smoking establishment, and don’t do business there. And don’t tell me that people don’t have free choice. That is rubbish. If it is important enough to you, you will make the choice to work or shop elsewhere. And as flying nurse has said, if you smoke, or make other poor life style choices, that is your problem, don’t make it mine by claiming it is a safey issue and you need me to help pay for your treatment. I won’t ask you to pay for the effects of my vices, and I don’t expect to have to pay for yours.

NDK, you must not have noticed the economy? Do you realize that for some people the choice comes down to suffer the smoke or be unemployed? How about if it was toxic mold, chemicals or asbestos in the workplace? Do you expect rules to be removed on those because it’s bad to be a “nanny?”
Smoke yourself silly if you want — but you have no right to subject others to your toxic fumes.

I suppose this means you don’t wear a seatbelt either. Can’t have anybody mandating your safety now can we.

Justesec and realist – Yes I wear my seatbelt, no I do not smoke, yes I wear a helmet, no I do not roller-skate in buffalo herds, yadayada. . . I do all of this of my own free will, my decision. I don’t frequent establishments that allow smoking, but when I do go into one, It’s my decision to do so and I know the consequences. Have I noticed the economy, well yes, as a matter of fact I have. There are plenty of jobs in the local economy for those who want to work. I am five short in my department right now in a business that pays very competitive wages. But that’s not the point. The point is free will, apparently something that either of you is acquainted with.

Your point about free will is a smokescreen. The relevant point is that you cannot allow an unsafe workplace.

None, et. al: I have no problem with you smoking, as long as it is not near me (designated smoking areas, no indoor spaces). I do have a problem with being forced to care for you (and pay for it since you will de “disabled” and unable to pay for your own care) after years of crappy lifestyle choices.
Like a yellow drinker complaining about how their life with cirrhosis is a living hades (and it is), or the diabetic who refused to do what it takes to keep their sugar under control and now they are missing feet and are on dialysis, it is hard to garner any sympathy.
If you smoke you will die. I do not have a problem with that. I have a major problem with having to put up with your whining on the way out. You did it to yourself, knowing full well it was bad for you.
You can smoke only if you die quietly and at home. No wasting valuable resources on bad lifestyle choices/
