I support council member Gallagher on this one. The market should decide if two stores of the same type are warranted, not the city council. Plus, the rules shouldn’t be different for liquor stores than if a restaurant wanted to occupy the space or a hardware store…would the council reject those proposals as well? I think Newport should focus on being more business friendly! Voters take notice this November!

This is what you get with too much government control and intervention over everything. It’s bad enough their hands are in our pockets, nowadays it’s a collar and leash also.

The Linn companies are trying to bully the existing liquor store. They are not trying to improve business in Newport! The Linn’s have been unfair for years. The council did the right thing by not letting them open another liquor store right next to an existing one. Open up a liquor store where it makes sense, not to drive somebody out. Bring in something that makes more sense instead of trying to intimidate an upstanding business.

I have to agree with John here. The bigger picture is what he discribes, and this is a common place business “bullying manuver” on their part. The guy weathered a hard time with construction and the like, with no corp. support as income…just plain holding on. The Newport council should be happy he held out and paid his taxes instead of folding…as the new challanger wants in the end, and has the money to hold out for.
