The reason clothes are stiff when line dried is because they have too much soap left in them. Washing machines, on the rinse cycle, don’t really fill up with water, but just spray the clothes. My washer empties right onto the floor and I could see from the pile of bubbles how much soap was still in the water when the machine turned off. I started using half of the recommended measure and it’s much better. They want you to use more soap so you will feel that you need to use fabric softener, and drier sheets, etc. But line drying is better, and more fun. I would say it’s not any more work than using a drier. And do they smell good! In winter I have wooden racks and they dry overnight.
