Death threats, demands to resign and other attacks to have only made State Representative Mary Franson, R-Alexandria, more determined to stay in office, she says. Continue Reading

It was a good joke and one that makes anyone with a brain think. Her point was not that people who are dependent on food stamps are not animals, but that they instead should be SMARTER and BETTER than animals.

Unfortunately she is right people are way to dependent on the government for their needs.

If you think she’s wrong you haven’t done your homework. A person can go down to social services, apply for a little bit of help to pay a few bills, (such as an unexpected medical bill) and be turned away because you have a job and make a certain amount of money even though its peanuts. That person works for a living and is struggling to pay other bills and feed their kids. The next person who walks in the door who makes no effort at all to find a job, sits on the couch all day, and relys on government to pay their bills and feed their kids gets all the help in the world. Sometimes more than enough. Its a joke.

The problem with her comment is that even though there are some people that abuse the system and do nothing but sit on the couch all day and collect benefits, there are also many that rely on the system to get them through rough times. The problem is with the system itself. There is no reward for working. If you make $1 more than allowed by their scale you are almost completely cut off. So what do people do? They turn down hours at work or they refuse a promotion, because it will cause them to lose money. What they need to have is a sliding scale for the working poor. As you improve your situation and start to get on your feet, the state will start to ween you off of the help. As it stands it rewards laziness and punishes those that try.
