Our view: Long-held community spirit is shining again

In the mid-1800s, back when Duluth was still young and booming but wasn’t yet connected to the outside world by rail or by any decent sort of road, our earliest settlers learned that to get through the rough winters they had to lean on each other, help each other and persevere. Standing together meant survival. Each spring they’d gather as one to cheer the arrival of the first supply-laden boats.
