Our view: Creepy miles-traveled tax can be left at the roadside
July 10, 2012 at 7:00 pm in Duluth News Tribune
Wasn’t this vehicle-miles-traveled tax idea left at the roadside where it belongs some three years ago? That’s about when the pricey proposal first was made to not only create an unwelcome new tax but to make federal law a troubling level of government intrusion.

Why is ther no mention that it was the infamous Oberstar who put forth this “Big Brother is Watching You” idea? People still worshiping him in spite of his senility that brought us this idea? Now it is “Creepy” but when Oberstar was pushing it the DNT thought the idea had merit. Two-faced DNT.

can you link to said article where they claim the idea has merit?> people can change their minds (see Romney) however and they take space in article to praise cravack for introducing legislation to block the proposal…seems pretty fair to me in an OP/ED article.

Ulysses……I agree! The DNT thought it was a good idea when Oberstar backed this fiasco! They almost always support public spending and taxes etc…..except when higher costs disrupt their business…..such as when their workers were on strike. Then they did not want to spend any money! Anyway, if the Federal and States…..spent the taxes they took in……responsibly….and used the existing gas tax via a true dedicated fund…they would have a lot more money for roads etc! They penalize owners of gas guzzlers….and all other taxes…..the people try to save money by using more fuel efficient cars ( as they cannot afford all of these taxes )…..so now, they wanna tax the people some more, because of less total gas tax money being collected! Well, guess what folks…they cannot have it both ways……they have got to be a lot more prudent with the incomming tax dollars….cuz ordinary folks no longer can afford all of Govt’s foolish spending…..all of these tax and spend programs they have, all lead to the same place……..BANKRUPTCY……China is gonna be eating our lunch….not too far down the road…..is this what we want, folks? I certainly…. DO NOT!

There will soon come a time when road maintenance money collected at the gas pump will not pay for needed road work. Fewer fossil-fuel vehicles, and fewer miles driven by fossil fueled vehicles, and improved mileage from fossil fueled vehicles will be the cause of this revenue decline.
Where will the money come from for road work?
