LETTER: Watch out for Sharia law in United States
July 7, 2012 at 3:47 am in The Daily Republic
I see where some states have passed legislation that Sharia law, which is a requirement of the Muslim religion, cannot be used in their courts. And some people are protesting that that is a form of discrimination, which it is not, because it is contrary to the laws set up by our Constitution. No religion should be allowed to influence our laws. Continue Reading

Mr. Zilverberg says,
“I see where some states have passed legislation that Sharia law, which is a requirement of the Muslim religion, cannot be used in their courts. And some people are protesting that that is a form of discrimination, which it is not, because it is contrary to the laws set up by our Constitution. No religion should be allowed to influence our laws.”
I ask Mr. Zilverberg to consider how it would seem for a state to pass legislation that Catholic or Jewish marriage ceremonies would no longer be recognized as valid. These anti-Muslim laws are unconstitutional because they discriminate against peoples’ religion. They are also unnecessary. The courts already are prohibited from applying laws that violate the constitution. You say “No religion should be allowed to influence our laws,” but it’s important that religious prejudice not be allowed to influence our laws.
Perhaps you could get to know at least one Muslim before you present yourself as an expert on Muslims. You are being influenced by a vicious group of ignorant racists that take advantage of peoples’ fears. This is a replay of the American Know-Nothing movement of the 1850s which warned people of the supposed danger that Catholics would impose Papal law, and a replay of the Nazi propaganda against Jews that allowed the German people before WW II to permit the Jews to be murdered.

It’s already happening JF. Consider, better yet “google”, Dearbornistan, Michigan. Don’t be ignorant JF. Educate yourself. States are trying to protect against the adoption of laws based on “sharia law” There not passing laws intended to discriminate against Muslims or anyone else.
You say “consider how it would seem for a state to pass legislation that Catholic or Jewish marriage ceremonies would no longer be recognized as valid.” That’s not what there doing!!!! A better question, and more on point to the instant case would be “consider how it would seem for a state to pass legislation that the Koran be read before the start of classes in all public schools” or “consider how it would seem for a state to pass legislation that all women conform to certain dress codes” or that courts prescribe criminal penalties based on the Koran, the list of possibilities goes on and on. The attempt at least, is already being made in certain areas of our country and the ACLU is on-board in a few cases. It’s ridiculous. It’s no different than Christians trying to pass laws to get prayer back into schools or maybe a law requiring nativity scenes in front of all government buildings during Christmas.
How can someone clearly opposed to the idea of laws based on religion be completely against States trying to ensure they are protected from it. Then to top it off you cry racism. Not all Muslims are Arab you know and not all Arabs are Muslim. Seems a little bit racist to assume that position Mr. Hickey
To be fair I should acknowledge that the large majority of Muslims are against “sharia law” and a lot of them came to this country to escape it. But we all know that it is always the “extremists” within religions, sects and groups in general that are the most dangerous. When they get into positions of power then all bets are off. Trying to protect against this is not racist. Your on the computer I assume reading this reply so google “dearbornistan” or go to creepingsharia dot wordpress dot com. Spend some time on the most credible sites. Even local newspaper articles about whats going on. Do you really think because you don’t see it in your town it must not be going on?
Welcome all who would come to America……. but lets keep it America. Bad enough taxpayers in large cities are paying for drivers licensing booklets and tests in up to 15 different languages. This is just one small example. Tax money……don’t you get it?
Mr. Zilverberg, thank you for your letter.
