Local view: True Sharia based on justice, equality, not fear, hatred

On May 21, Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback signed legislation barring all Kansas state courts from considering “foreign” law in their rulings. While many other states, including Minnesota, attempted in vain, Kansas became the fifth state to successfully enact such legislation, joining Oklahoma, Arizona, Louisiana and Tennessee.

Oh poor Muslims. How dare we not allow your laws to influence our own. If a British couple were fighting over the custody of a child in an American court, I very much doubt the American judge would take into account British laws and precedent whether those laws were fair or not. Additionally, the courts do not take into account Mosaic law when settling matters involving Jewish or Christian litigants.

How is sharia “just” when a female rape victim must bring multiple eyewitnesses to her own defense or risk being punished for being raped? And where in the Koran is it illegal for a woman to drive a motor vehicle?
Why should any sovereign nation subordinate its own laws to sharia? To put it another way, Does the State allow any other religious law to trump constitutional and statute law? We can’t even display a copy of the 10 commandments or a nativity scene on public property, but we’re willing to embrace sharia for fear of offending muslims? I don’t like a lot of established federal law when it comes to their infringement upon my faith, but it’s still the law. I will not sit idly by if any other group seeks religious exemptions if/while Judaism or Christianity doesn’t receive the same treatment!

So which chapter on peace, love and justice had a Pakistani mob drag an old man from his home, beat him to death, and set his body on fire for throwing some pages of the Koran into the street? Most of these laws are fear pandering for the tea pub base, but let’s not pretend that there isn’t a a significant percentage of Muslims who use the Koran as ideological cover to commit horrendous human rights violations.

Google the list of countries where Sharia law is practiced and let me know if you’d like to live in any of them. It’s basically a list of very opressive countries.
Than look at the list of countries where secular civil law is practiced and compare the two. Certainly there are a few civil law countries were I’d not want to live either….but the list is very skewed towards reasonably decent places at least.
My guess is that that will answer this question as to whether we should accomidate Sharia law here in the USA. My personal answer would be firm “NO” ! We have enough problems in this country without importing disfunctional and oppressive religious rules that are incompatible with a free and open society that we should all value.

“The sad truth is that Muslim clerics and rulers either totally ignore the Quran or read it with power-corrupted eyes while devising such laws. This results in a delusional and horrifying Sharia, giving opportunity to states like Kansas to enact anti-Sharia legislation.” (from article)
Herein lies the problem with modern Islam. Moderate speakers (as the writer) realize that there is a problem with Islamic teaching, but are in practical terms, helpless to correct it.
Islam is in crisis. The fundamental problem is in part, an interaction of religious, tribal societies with a secular, diverse world.
So, what occurs are moderate, rational believers in Islam voicing the opinion of the writer. If only the ‘real Sharia’, that is, the religion of reasonable believers– could be understood. Unfortunately for these believers, the power in Islam is not coming from moderates at this time. It is the extremists who have, for many years, worked on gaining followers by creating schools and charities– often as a counterpoint to ruthlessly despotic anti-Islamist governments.
Sharia should be viewed as all other theological laws in the US. If it breaks the Bill of Rights, then it is illegal, or ought not be legal.
