Terry Wanzek, Jamestown, N.D., column: Farm bill should grow food, not food prices

The labels simply would convey information that consumers don’t need while also making our grocery-store bills rise.
Moreover, there’s a simple solution already in place: People who want to avoid biotech food already can do so by buying organic food. If the label says the food is organic, then it doesn’t have biotech ingredients. Continue Reading

I think that the writer of this letter actually makes some good points, but the message is largely lost when he starts adding talking points about “radicals” and New York. Make your argument with information, not personal attacks. You’ll get a lot further.

While the author raises some good points, her assertion that a consumer can avoid biotech foods by simply buying organic is false.
There are no accepted standards for what is & what is not organic. The criteria presently in use were developed by the producers themselves & vary greatly between differing states & regions.
As national grocery chains are the first to admit, at the present time “organic” produce is simply an advertising gimmick. Unless you “buy local” from a producer you know & trust, it is impossible to say what chemicals or bioengineering was used to produce your fruit & vegetables.
A recent study tested the amount of pesticide residue found on organic versus non organic vegetables found in a national chain store. They were identical, even though the organic produce was 25% more expensive

His assertion. Not hers. Sorry for the typo.
As an aside one would hope a state senator, even one directly involved in this issue like the author, would either be more informed or more honest. Very disappointing.

And yet, the myth of organic foods has been enormously profitable to Whole Foods, whose stock is above $90/share.

If a use can be found for the biggest crop in “organic” fields, weeds, can be found there will really be money to be made.

The Federal Government deliberately screwed up the definition of “Organic” to please Big Agriculture.
The folks that were selling “organic” food previous to the Fed getting involved fought the proposed language, and failed.
Once again, and right on cue: A three-letter Federal agency sells out the citizens in order to please the corporations.
