Carlson, Mondale enlisted to fight voter ID amendment
June 26, 2012 at 7:00 pm in Duluth News Tribune
A group opposed to the proposed voter ID constitutional amendment has named former Democratic Vice President Walter Mondale and former Republican Gov. Arne Carlson as the leaders of its statewide campaign. Continue Reading

These Liberal types amaze me you need ID for all sorts of things even for some thing as simple as taking a book out of a library but for one of the most important things in your life Voting the demoncrats think you should not have to show ID. I guess then all those dead folks would not be able to vote and be disenfranchised or same with the multiple voters. Talk about as crooked as a hind leg on a dog and about as transparent.

I can’t imagine someone being so alienated from our society that they have no ID and no family member, church, civic club, political party, voter registration group, friend, or anyone else to help them get one. I can imagine cheats voting more than once, especially in urban areas where people don’t know their neighbors. We need voter IDs in today’s Minnesota to protect the value of the votes of honest citizens.

Phil….not everyone has a right to vote! Voter’s who have moved from 1 state to another, students attending school away from home etc….NEED to register in their new area….as soon as they move…..like changing your address….your drivers license…..we all know the drill for such things! All this is for is to verify….that you DO HAVE A RIGHT TO VOTE…..in the new area that you reside in! You ONLY have to register once…in your new area….and I am sure most people can do that BEFORE election day! This is NOT to obstruct ANY vote…..if the voter IS ELIGIBLE to vote! This is not rocket science….or NOT a hardship on anyone! Responsible voters do not want ANYBODY to vote 2 or more times in different areas….or to allow INELIGIBLE voters to vote at all…..if you are ineligible to vote…..register and do what you have to do to become eligible….pretty simple stuff!

I *LOL’d* pretty hard when I read this.
1. How can there possibly be “voter fraud” every day? Are there elections that the rest of us are unaware of “every day”?
2. Your made up “friend” is making nonsensical claims. First, if you don’t have to show an ID to vote, how could she possibly know that these students’ have no ID? Second, college students have drivers licenses and student IDs. To proclaim that they don’t have them when is silly and disingenuous.
3. Voting is a fundamental right. Taking out library books is not a fundamental right. You’re comparing apples to oranges.
4. It trivializes the state Constitution to amend it in this manner. The GOP has lost its way with these silly games.
5. Shame on the GOP for black-balling one of the best governors this state has ever had. He’s not a “RINO”; rather the tea-partiers are johnny-come-latelys who don’t know what the GOP should be.

Are these the provisions to safeguard the value of my vote that you are referring to?

Phil, you have got to be kidding. In the real world there is voter fraud every day. In the real world, crooks take advantage of well-meaning but foolish or naive people. In the real world I have to show an ID to go to the doctor or cash a check. It is free to get an ID. And people are paid to make sure everyone who is legal has one, if they so desire. Voter fraud happens everywhere, even here. Like last presidential election. A woman I know was an election judge and there were tons of college age kids who came in to her voting place and had no id. Nothing. Not a library card or a bill. Nothing, and one man vouched for all of them. They were all laughing and smirking but the ;aw says one person can ‘vouch’ for up to ten people. Is that fair? Is me having one vote while someone votes twice or three times FAIR? No. This is not a hardship for people. It is wisdom to ensure one person, one vote. Our countries entire system depends on it.

Why must we always be forced to listen to politicals from the past. Is their knowledge superior to ours or are we just suppose to respect their opinions as the “gospel truth”? I would much sooner decide on my own.

Merv, you make no sense at all. Did you ever take a class on government? California has 55 electoral votes. Montana and Wyoming each have 3 votes. How is this unfair? Where did you dream up this post?

Merv……every state gets a number a house reps based on population of that particular state……plus…..2 U.S. senators for each and every state……total….100 U.S. Senators…..and 535 congress people! The reason for each state having 2 U.S. Senators….is to help the smaller population states have a bit more representation….otherwise, California….New York……Florida etc….would be getting almost ALL of the hand-outs from Washington! Comprende?

I’m all for reform when it comes to the identification process of voter. My issue here is process. You simply don’t amend the constitution with something that ultimately won’t even exist at some point in the future. Do you really believe in 50 years that we will carry plastic ID’s? Of course not. Then we will have to fight to re-amend the constitution again.
Additionally thus will not stop voter fraud. I mean, nobody has a fake ID in this state?
So work on the issue through the legislature. Maybe a state ID is the best solution for now, but it won’t be in the future. Law is much easier to change, then the constitution.

Fine, people need a voter ID. Just make sure the people who need an ID get it.

Here’s an idea, borrow the motor vehicle camera and when people come to vote give them an ID at the same time. I would think they would have some proof of who they are that could be checked against the voter roles.

Question, what kind of paperwork do you need to get a state ID and wouldn’t that be good enough to vote also? If so do both at the same time and save people a trip.

Quagmire….to my knowledge, in Minnesota…..if you have a drivers license…..you cannot get a state I.D…..but, if you do not have a license, you can get a state I.D….either way, a state I.D. or a drivers license is ample proof to register and or vote!

Mr. Quagglechek,
My sister didn’t drive until she was forty-five. She had a MN state ID up until then. She needed two forms of ID to get it. She used her social security card and her birth certificate.

I just got a card in the mail from the local courthouse telling me that I’m registered to vote and where I should go to vote. (postcard) So, if they already KNOW I’m here and registered, what’s the point in having some kind of ID when I go to vote?
Maybe that card will be enough???

Bac……that postcard showing you that you are registered to vote, the place to vote, which districts for school board, judicial district, cty commissioner, congressional and state districts, etc….means just that…that you the person are registered….unfortunately, that does not prove that you are the NAMED PERSON….which is where the photo I.D. proves that you are the NAMED PERSON that is registered!

Vern according to tj you would need a ss card and a birth certificate…. so accordingly if that’s good enough for a state ID, the same would go to be able to vote. I know you can call St. Louis co. and get a copy of your birth certificate. Iwould think an ss card is something most people have?

Look, I’m not for voter ID….. having said that I do think it’s coming. Might as well make it as easy on people to get one.

Quagmire….What I meant, was at the voting station…..the only proof you need is a photo ID…..( a state ID or a DL# ) to prove that you are who you say you are! To get a state ID…..yes, you would probably need a SS card and another form of ID, such as a birth certificate….. as you cannot use your DL….as you cannot get a state photo ID , if you already have a DL.

Vern, I understand about the picture ID. What I’m saying is if a ss card and a birth cetificate is good enough proof to get you a picture state ID then why wouldn’t that paperwork be good enough to prove who you are to vote?

Vern, we are like two ships passing in a fog. I am talking about the people that don’t have an ID of any kind. If they brought a birth certificate and a ss card to get a picture ID that paperwork would be enough proof to get one. So what I’m saying is why do you even need a picture ID when simple paperwork is enough to prove who you are. Why cause more hardship than necessary?
