WASHINGTON The Supreme Court should uphold a law requiring most Americans to have health insurance if the justices follow legal precedent, according to 19 of 21 constitutional law professors who ventured an opinion on the most-anticipated ruling in years.

If it is constitutional that the government can dictate what we buy, we are really in trouble.

I think I am an excellent driver and don’t need car insurance. How dare the government say I have to buy it.

freethink – First off lets compare apples to apples. The mandated auto liability insurance protects the other guy so your sarcasm was mis-placed. Obviously there are clear public interest reasons when the government has to dictate. But if the case law and legal precedents therein support unfettered power to dictate “what we buy”, then I agree, “we are really in trouble”.
As an aside, the article does not claim this power comes from the Constitution” but rather, as I said legal precedent from the case law. That can get tricky unless you have been to law school and have studied all the cases cited to support this position. It’s way above my pay-grade so we’ll wait and see how it comes out. Also let me add that a lot of decisions have very sound dissenting opinions written, so that even the best legal minds in this country can be divided. Therefore I am doubtful that you, me and MD are going to figure it all out on this forum. All we are doing is giving our opinion and you know what they say about those….

In simplistic terms this is the same as Social Security. We contribute to that for our own good so having to get health insurance is for your own good.

I bet everything you know about socialism you learned from Fox News. Maybe you should look at some examples of successful Socialist countries like most of northern Europe and even Canada for that matter. They might pay a little more in taxes but they beat America in about every single statistic. Socialism is not the evil you’ve been told it is.
Also, I am a socialist. And I, along with most of my peers, think I am a pretty “good guy”.

Really, they are not the good guys? In South Dakota? You do know that a farmers co-op is the definition of socialism. No one seems to mind that.
