DNR: Majority of wolf survey respondents don’t support a wolf season
June 21, 2012 at 6:25 am in Duluth News Tribune
More than 7,000 people have completed an online survey about Minnesota’s first formal wolf hunting and trapping season, Kathy DonCarlos, deputy director of the Division of Fish and Wildlife for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, said today. Continue Reading

Occupy wolf hunt! Lets get those 6000 opposing to disrupt the deer/wolf slash hunt. That will make Mark Johnson change his tune. What are they going to do, arrest 6 thousand people?

Please tell me how you fools are going to determine where the wolf hunters are hunting? I don’t think they’ll be anywhere near 6000 screaming clowns.I’m going to get a license and I’ll guarantee you won’t be able to find me.

You’ll get the real results when the licenses go on sale. I’m hoping to put a nice wolf on my wall.

Yeah…hanging dead animals on your wall shows people how manly you are…especially when you killed it with a long range rifle.

As usual the Deer Hunters Association is in denial. IF I have ever heard double talk it comes from one of the heads of the association in that article. They actually believe that they should be the ones determining what and what not should be hunted. Forget the public at large. Totally dillusional.

Many expect the wolf quota will be filled via the trapping portion of the season where both snares and foot traps will be allowed in MN and WI. Traps must be checked daily but we can expect many wolves will suffer for days waiting to be euthanized. Welcome to the DNR turn your clocks back 100 years.

I remember my first encounter with a trapper. These guys are a different breed or sure. I was walking my dog on the outer edge of my property when I almost walked right into a leghold trap. Remember this is private property now…..I confiscated the trap and I was so incensed I wanted to find out who set a trap on my property. I left a note telling this person to call this number. About 3 days later I get a call from this person. He tells me ” what the hell am I doing messing with his trap? I was really going now. I told him to come get his trap. I made the decision rather than to call the FG dept that I was going to prove a point to this id&*(. I threw his trap in the lake behind my house and when he came to get his trap I told him to jump in the lake that’s where his trap was. He proceeded to threaten to call the authorities about his trap. I told him to go ahead and we would see how far he got considering the trap was on my private property and I certainly did and would not give anyone permission to do that. These people think they are helping wildlife with their trapping. Preganant nursing animals, family pets, unintended targets,Endangered Species, no animal is safe from these people. I remember talking to Dan Stark about allowing snaring of wolves, and he acted as if he could care less if animals suffer in these snares……The lack of concern and emotion is truly shocking. Rural america stuck in 1923. I really wish these people would come into the 21st century

Trappers are really a threat to pets, non-target animals, people, etc and any trap on public lands should be immediately destroyed. I see the wildlife haters (hunters, trappers), are thumbing down all of our comments.

All one needs to do is spend a few hours reading the comments on one of the hunting blogs to see the true nature of today’s “sportsmen” (all laugh here)…..They brag about killing coyote pups or allowing their mutts to kill the coyotes and then flush out the pups. These “stewards” of the environment actually think elk and deer belong to them and they really get agitated when they see coyotes or wolves killing a fawn or a deer…..Why would any wildlife agency turn these animals over to these rabid ignorant hunters?

Previous law already allowed landowners to kill wolves if they threatened livestock. The stated goal is to thin the Wolf population. What is an acceptable number for cattle farmers? That answer would be zero. Nevermind, the simple fact that they knowingly are raising a non-native animal in wolf country.
The only folks in wolf country who have a problem with wolves are cattle farmers and summer home owners from the twin cities.
Don’t we have an over-population of deer? Hey let’s kill off the only predator, that makes sense.

I dont know that summer home owners mind them-most probably romanticize them. Its mostly under educated locals who are afraid of them.

“In all reality, that survey was just to see how people felt,” Cannella said. “The public had already spoken via the Legislature.” I say “In all reality the survey is evidence that the Legislature is not representing the people. Once again.”
I think it would be entertaining if all those who get licenses to hunt wolves are required to have their name posted publicly. Except we all know that would be a slaughter.

By some of the comments on here. Most here, don’t have a clue about wildlife management. With deer it’s CWD, Canines it’s mange. Over population of any speices,Mother nature is more cruel than any human can be. I have seen 4 wolves with mange this year, 3 wolves had no fur at all and it was in January. The 4th was in March. Some here need to get a educated in wildlife management before they make a comment on something they know nothing about. Base it on facts, not emotion.

Gee Mike- What is it with hunters and trappers. Most of you have no clue what wildlife management really consists of. “Harvesting” an animal may make you feel important. The majority of hunters now use all this technology like predator calling” that mimics pups in distress”. No Fair Chase. Baiting. Snaring. Trapping. Just like shootin fish in a barrel . Wildlife management today is all about providing hunters and trappers with opportunity. Things will change. By the way, people devoid of emotion, empathy, and decency should stop telling us people with emotion to stop using it- at least we have it

FarmersI’m a hydrologist, with an ecology degree as well. There have been a couple of sick Deer in this state in the last year also, duh. The lobbying comes from cattle farmers, deer Hunters, and transplants. Wolf overpopulation simply isn’t true , there is obvious deer overpopulation.
Its just a selfish desire to kill off an apex predator. Deer Hunters spend money and cattle farmers can lose money.

Around 5 yrs ago,the DNR wanted to reduce the deer herd, so the did. This action had brought the deer herd and wolf population out of balance. Since then the wolves had been preying more on cattle and pets. It’s time for a management plan for the wolves. They are getting to bold. We need to to put the fear of humans in them again. I know a guy that a wolf attacked his dog. The only thing he could do, was to run up to the wolf and kicked it to get it off his dog.

Actually depredation has stabilized with the wolf population in the last TEN years, so you’re wrong again.

No it has not stabiized. Where have you been. Here is a little public knowledge for you. All of last year there were just over 200 wolves trapped by wildlife Services. From the 1st of January of this year thru March, there have been 70 wolves trapped by Wildlife services and State wolf trappers. That don’t sound like it stablized to me.

You changed the subject. We were talking about the last 5 years, not the first 3 months of this year. Dips and spikes will happen but over the last 10 years depredation has been stable as has the wolf population, according to the DNR website.

Kayak- Hunters aren’t concerned with biological carrying capacity. They want the bare minimum wolf number because they don’t want to share the game with them. Wolves make elk and deer more wary and hunters don’t want to hunt. They are lazy. If wolves didn’t eat any moose elk and deer and only ate Chinese food hunters would bit&* that the wolves wasted too many napkins…… Then they call themselves responsible stewards of the environment. As if being close to the wilderness gives them ownership and control over it.

Goal was 1500 wolves in MN, DNR claims there are at least 3000. This 3000 has been thrown around for a few years now, so unless the food supply has been reduced, there are more than 3000 wolves presently in MN. I have zero problem getting the number back to the original goal of 1500. Walt Disney is dead and so are his talking animals.

Mike, you are the guy who hopped on here with condescension towards practically everyone.
The deer heard by everyone in the worlds assessment is overpopulated, and just experienced the highest winter survival in recorded history.
The wolf population has experienced modest growth annually, and is not even in the ballpark of the highwater mark.
