New policy could affect area immigrants

Must have come to the U.S. under the age of 16 for consideration
for deferred action process
WORTHINGTON Hundreds of thousands of young, educated, illegal immigrants may get the opportunity to stay in the United States and work under a new policy announced Friday by the Obama administration, but it will take a few weeks until requests can be accepted. Continue Reading

The unemployment rate for 16-24 year olds has increased at an astounding rate under obama and continues to do so. So, where are all the jobs going to come from for these new “legal” immigrants? This is nothing but a blatent political move because obama was even losing the latino support he had in 2008. Why not start by securing the border so no more kids are brought here by “no fault of their own”. The life boat is full, sinking, and we continue to put more people in it.

Pat E. — there’s so much misinformation in your comment I don’t know where to start. You need to read up on this declaration, seriously, to get the facts straight. Turn off Fox News.
The unemployment rate is high among young people, true. But it’s HIGH for all ages in the workforce, but decreasing, albeit at a not-very-fast rate. It’s a huge problem all around the world. Fortunately for us in Nobles County and MN, our unemployment rates are well below the national average. Read the article in today’s paper. Find some good news in that.
The 800,000 young people are ALREADY here and aren’t going to leave. There’s a whole set of guidelines that these individuals must meet in order to be granted work permits.
Fact: illegal immigration numbers from Latin American countries are way down. (Thank the poor job market.) More Asians are immigrating, legally or illegally, to the US than Latinos. (New report out today.)
Lastly, Obama’s approval rating among Latinos is over 60%, Romney’s about 21%. I’d take those numbers — and he didn’t need this declaration to achieve it.

Deano – read up on the declaration. Eligible young people who come forward do NOT put their parents at risk.
Are you thanking or condemning the Republicans for their role in illegal immigration. I can’t tell from your comment.

To me, it sounds very complicated but also a step in the right direction. The old saying, “One is known by the company they keep” , is true. I hope that young Latino’s who truly want to prosper and succeed in the U.S. will choose to follow good role models.

The vast majority of these young people are good citizens and nobody should feel threatened by them. Those with criminal records, etc., will not be covered under this new declaration. It’s all there in black and white.

eastender…Turn off Fox News? Where is that coming from! And just where is my “misinformation” you are accusing me of? Check any govt. facts and figures on unemployment data for 16-24 year olds and see for yourself. Do you know why some figures show it decreasing if it is all….because in alot of places people have QUIT looking for jobs…because there aren’t any, so they aren’t counted as unemployed anymore. Yes, we are lucky here in SW MN but if the owners of the pig plant decided to close shop, this would be a ghost town overnight because we decided to put all of our pork chops in one basket.
The fact remains that we are a nation of laws and obama has side stepped the Senate and House yet again for political gain.

The House and the Senate have done NOTHING to resolve immigration issues — for years and years! Nobody wants to touch it. The Republicans filibustered the Dream Act, all the while claiming the White House had not given them any legislation. (They still make that stupid claim today.) As for “sidestepping” a do-nothing Congress, that’s not a bad thing. And, just so you know, 4 recent presidents have done the same thing as Obama just did to offer some immigration relief and piece of mind to immigrants. That would be 3 Republicans, and 1 Democrat for those of you keeping count: Reagan, George HW Bush, Clinton, and George W. Bush. But, now, the crazies are coming out to attack Obama and apparently find nothing wrong with what his predecessors did. Look it up yourself if you don’t believe me. Use the Google and the Internets.
The hypocrisy is stunning.
Something else to Google: The Obama administration has deported MORE illegals than any other.
And, pat e., you better hope that JBS continues to prosper, or your house in this “ghost town” will be worthless. You should, for selfish reasons, be rooting for their success!
Isn’t it fascinating that nothing gets the right wing adrenaline flowing faster, and hotter, than a newspaper article about immigration?

Minnesota unemployment is well under the national average, and even lower in Nobles County.

So eastender, people who want the rule of law followed are “crazies” huh? Seems the one who gets their “adrenaline flowing faster, and hotter” when it comes to illegal immigration would be you eastender. I have never rooted for the demise of JBS and I repsect the hard work the employees do…..however there are many negatives that come along with a packing plant in your town. I guess people resort to name calling when the truth is hard to argue with.

Re-read my post. I never said anything about crazies and rule of law. Crazies don’t see the hypocrisy of criticizing one person for doing the same thing that others have done before — all perfectly LEGAL actions, by the way. So, President Obama and 4 of his predecessors all followed the law. Got it?
As far as “adrenaline flowing faster and hotter” who was the first person to post a comment to this article, critical of the President and his declaration? Oh, I see.

I just watched the latest unemployment numbers as of 8:00am today. Almost 400,000 NEW unemployment claims last month, AND, the 4 week trend shows an upward trend. Yes, I watched this on Fox News because the other networks would never report this because it makes obama look bad. Now, my point all along has been that there are not enough jobs for the LEGAL residents of this country. Where are these newly “legalized” workers going to work. Look folks, I’m not a racist, anti JBS, or a Worthington hater. When there is an elephant in the room and people refuse to see it just to be politically correct, I will continue to point it out.

You’re wrong. MSNBC also reported the jobs numbers story on their website. Compare their story to the one on Fox News website. Both claim that “jobless claims FELL”.

Of course, the numbers are disturbing. The Obama administration is the first to admit that. Equally disturbing are misleading statements.

Funny since the next official jobs report doesn’t come out after the end of June. How is it that if only 1 media source has the information, that makes them not the bias one, but ALL the others are? Seems that Foxnews takes joy and celebrates anything bad that may happen in the US, yet down plays any good things that have occured. But they aren’t bias in anyway….but if you want the real numbers (and not rely on someone spoon feeding you them) heres the real source;

American car bailout, decision and killing of Bin Laden, 25 months of positive job numbers, ending and withdrawl from Iraq, closed the doughnut hole in Medicare, credit reform (Bought a new car and dealer stated “thanks to Obama, i have to show you your credit score before we finance your loan. Before we didn’t have to.”)….plenty of positives that aren’t covered.
I find it absurd for people to claim one media is bias, yet use a different bias media as evidence to support their point. Perhaps, people need to spend less time on MSNBC or FoxNews and more time doing real research into issues. It would better educate the voting public. Of course, this would imply work and judgement of the source of any information one might obtain.

Positive job numbers conjured by reducing the number of people reported available for work. The autoworkers union bailout was bad. There is no credit reform. The laws put in place by the democrats that caused the financial collapse are still on the books. There was no shortage of coverage of the Navy Seals heroics in the killing of Bin Laden.

“Positive job numbers conjured”…just go to the link i posted…those are the factual NEW jobs numbers for 20+ months. Then even have nice charts and graphs so you dont have to read. The auto bailout was bad how? You really wanted MORE jobs lost? There was credit reform. Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility, and Disclosure Act signed in 2009. And yes, credit card are forms of credit. Dems didnt cause the financial collapse. “The U.S. Senate’s Levin–Coburn Report asserted that the crisis was the result of “high risk, complex financial products; undisclosed conflicts of interest; the failure of regulators, the credit rating agencies, and the market itself to rein in the excesses of Wall Street.” Notice that failure of regulators…not a Dem idea there. No there wasnt shortage, but there was a down play on if the choice to enter Pakistan to kill him. Few on Fox said it was a hard choice. Which it was…if his intelligence was wrong we would be in a 3rd war….which would have been the 2nd due to faulty intelligence. You seem to share the same gloomy, incorrect views that FoxNews has.

The problems occurred because banks were forced to loan money to people that had no hope of paying it back. That is the root of the problem. I know you don’t like it because it was Barney Frank and Chris Dodd and the democrats that forced them to do so. Too bad for all of us but that’s the way it is. The banks were juggling useless loans that were manufactured by democrat fiat.

“But these are different debates than the one this book has provoked. Contrary to many commentators on Reckless Endangerment, and to its chief claims, it was Wall Street, not the GSEs (Mae and Mack), that fundamentally caused the 2007–2008 crisis, which was driven not merely by a headlong pursuit of easy profit but also by ethically dubious practices.”

Mae was fine for 80+ years…and Mack was fine for 30+…. It was the greed of Wall St and unregulation that did it.

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were the dumping ground for the worthless paper that the banks were required to write for people that didn’t have the means to support any kind of a mortgage. The reason most banks were bailed out was the government knew they themselves were to blame. Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and the banks were all bailed out with make believe money. The current largess is being financed by the Chinese and rapd fire printing presses at the mint. There are some fools asking for more stimulus money. The fact is that the level of spending during the stimulus is the base line to current spending. Spending didn’t go to pre-stimulus levels and then up, it continued up from stimulus levels.

Don’t like the economy? If we hadn’t cut all the government sector jobs … we would be at 7% unemployment. Don’t like the economy? Republicans blocked President Obama’s proposal to create millions of jobs in this country. Don’t like the economy? Republicans are currently blocking a transportation bill that would create 4 million jobs RIGHT NOW.
Why would the Republican party do that? Because – they think you’re stupid enough to blame one man. And chances are … you are.

The Republicans are blocking 4 millions Obama jobs right now? Really? Just as Obama said about his last claim that failed to produce jobs now “Shovel ready wasn’t as shovel ready as we’d thought”. Lets be perfectly honest…the gov’t doesn’t create jobs and they don’t produce anything other than regulations and lawsuit fodder.
Where is the gov’t going to get the money to pay for 4 million jobs? Go further into debt which we can’t pay for or continue to destroy the already struggling economy who does actually create jobs? Don’t buy the B.S. that every gov’t spent dollar bring back $1.75. If that was true we would be running a massive gov’t surplus after spending ourselves into oblivion.

WOW. The Obama “protectionists” are out in full force. Most everything I’m reading comes from the pages of “Media Matters”, “Huffington Post” and MSNBC. Yet they say say to turn off Fox? Interesting. Perhaps they should watch Fox more often and see what the Obama Media ISN’T telling them. Obama trying to create 2 million jobs? Which union give away was that of which you speak; Solyndra? Razor? Remember, as Obama has asked; If you are getting married ask your guests to give HIM a donation in lieu of a gift. Can you get any more arrogant this this guy?
