UND ties up loose ends as nickname is retired
June 16, 2012 at 11:22 am in Grand Forks Herald
Issues include keeping logo copyright, honoring history and, in time, adopting new nicknameThe retirement was largely completed before a statewide petition forced the university to stop. Now, with the support of voters Tuesday, it can finish what it started. Continue Reading

Thankfully, the name is forever retired and we can finally move on to a bigger and brighter future for the university. Also, it will be fun to see the opposition scramble to get votes in order to amend the state constitution. Even if it does make the November ballot, the people of this state will strongly vote in favor of keeping the name retired.

A better question might be, why would anyone claiming to love the Sioux nickname and logo go around calling the University “pathetic and impotent”? Clearly you don’t care about the students, only your beloved imagery. Sad.

I wonder if calling people names to boost himself above others in order to feel like he is holding on to control like alwayserect does would be a kin to being a bully. I think so. He hates the NCAA because he thinks they are bullies. I can only imagine how out of control he feels right now. And how he feels about himself because of it.

Anything that the retirement of the Fighting Sioux is going to cost mega bucks.. Lets start with letter heads, envelopes and all paper products.. Now we move to Football, Hockey and all other sports.. New Jerseys and other sports stuff.. This is going to cost much more than most people could imagine.. Do you know who will be ending up to pay for this? It’s the students.. I’ll bet everyone who enrolls at this school will have to pay for it this fall.. Go figure..

Most of the teams either did not have the logo or name on Jersey’s or already changed over. They are allowed to to use and sell all imagery that they have on hand till it runs out. In other words when they need paper, they will buy new paper without imagery at the same cost except for changing the logo. One three game playoff run like NDSU had last fall and we are now allowed to host would pay for any extra costs with ease. Why don’t you give some facts on those envelope costs so we can discuss. I will start. 3 NDSU playoff games that would have been prohibited here brought in around $1 million in ticket revenue. Also San Jose St was paid $900,000 to play at Wisconsin in football, something UND can do now that the name is retired. Your turn.

Most of the FCS playoff ticket revenue goes to the NCAA so very little income is gained by the host institution.

check the facts. Gene Taylor has figured out a way for NDSU athletics to do ok financially when playoff games are in the FargoDome.

They need to to keep it because someone as hateful towards UND as you alwayserect would take it and use it against the University to hurt them. Presumably to honor the tribes in some twisted way.

By conditions of the agreement with the NCAA the university can NOT give it to the Sioux or anyone else.

It’s over. Most of the state disagreed with you. Accept it. Deal with it. Go start a support group. Go buy a 12 pack and drown your sorrows if that’s what it takes. But stop your whining and be a man and move on. You’re just sounding pathetic.

Like Craig said, I have a life to live. Sorry I can’t be there for you, helping you live your life through the comments section of a website. BTW, I’m a Bison fan. NDSU grad. And a Minnesota resident. Don’t really have a dog in the fight, but I recognize foolishness when I see it. Also, I’m baking pies today. Does that upset you as well?

Yes alwayserect I believe the University of North Dakota athletics need money more than you and your name. I also believe the tribes go on without being on NCAA tee shirts. By the way you had called everyone else in the world a name but me till now. And it really hurt. Thank you for including me in your hate speech.

I think most people do not want to be hostile and abusive. So they voted to separate themselves from supporters like you. To be clear I know almost all supporters of the name are not hostile and abusive. But alwayserect you are and I voted against you.

I picture alwayscorrect as the kid in Christmas Story. You know, the bully who got taken out by Ralphie. This angry person is stuck in a lonely, lonely place. He’s hammered the point home
about the nickname being retired for all the wrong reasons. We get it, man. I’m one of the odd ones who’s opposed the imagery for 20 years, so I don’t care why it’s over. I’m just glad it is. Every time I read one of alwayscorrect’s posts I picture Ralphie on top of him, punching his face. It helps me enjoy this board. You should all do the same.

Eventually, given the expectation that there will be a replacement name, someone could start a list (interactive website) of prospective replacement names so that whenever Pres Kelly does get around to forming the third committee, the best ideas may have already been suggested independently, or at least a good frame of preference. It will be interesting to see the suggestions and the parameters used to define what the new name can and will be. Poison or pablem…most people will have strong opinions to either extreme. “Warriors of the North” (military term, GFAFB) and “Flame/Spirit/Green/Wind” might represent names on the opposite ends. There’s already a website supporting “Suhaki”. The rest of this business can take care of itself. Picking the name is the next best thing….and two and half years to do so.

or they could simply be “THE University of North Dakota” known as North Dakota. A University does not need a special name for its sports teams. Some schools have done well with out them.

Yes, the UND certainly could, but again given the expectation that Pres Kelly is going to form a name committee and given the expectation that there will be a new name, it would be interesting to see what names would make the prospective list as suggested by people outside the name committee.

Warriors of the North? Am I the only one who’d sense a double entendre? Are you kidding me? Still, you could start a whole new controversy, but that seems to be what everyone likes. How about s@vages and use a norseman image.

Precisely. Consequently, it lies on the poison end of the continuum, and therefore generally unacceptable, because of the ambiguity of the term “Warrior” and how it relates to either military or tribal association. there are military personnel and their families and others who regard the term Warrior with great pride, and this term seems to be a very popular term nationally today (see also Wounded Warriors). beyond that, there is already a Warriors of the North at the GFAFB, including illustration. (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Warriors-of-the-North-Grand-Forks-Air-Force-Base/119047998108978 ) . So, it’s already taken. If not a military term like “Warrior”, perhaps there is a term worth considering that does effectively tie the UND (with its ties to the GFAFB) into the military superiority phenomena. Unlikely, unless its something more appealing, and middle of the continuum, like Flyers, Pilots, Jets, etc.

Amazing but unfortunately predictable.
The nickname was initially an issue with both the NCAA and other schools due to concerns over racism.
To be fair, UND officials have sidestepped the racism issue for some time focusing soley on athletics concerns.
But to continue to sell Sioux gear, to maintain the copyright, to continue to profit off of something that was supposed to be racist?
Just more evidence of how low UND and their leaders have sunk. And the NCAA going along with it shows it was less about racism for them than an inconvenience, a thorn in the side, that they wanted removed. Of course since they not only allow other schools to maintain the use of indian nicknames but allow them to continue to use them along with clearly racist pageantry and chants–that should not be much of a surprise.

Really your going back to why other tribes allow this and not ours? Anyway I believe it is part of the agreement that they keep control of their trademarks, I can not confirm this, but giving it up to someone like alwayserect to use to perpetuate hate towards UND and NCAA would not be a wise move anyway and think it why it is in the agreement.
