Do you actually believe anyone outside the state knows anything about ND? Rand-McNalley once omitted the state from its atlas.

One of my professors at UND went on and on about that incident. He was truly upset. I think that was the only heard him speak in anything other than a monotone (history professors are prohibited by covenant from showing emotion or being entertaining during lecture).

Actually I can think of a few that are real fun to visit with. Dr. Berg, Dr. Porter, Dr. Iseminger, Dr. Broedel, and Dr. Mochoruk. Dr. Iseminger has to be one of the greatest lecturers on campus. Dr. Mochoruk is one of the nicest people you could meet at UND.

Jim M was my undergrad advisor. I miss him. I worked quite a bit with Dr. Porter as well. While I knew Dr. Isemenger I never had a class with him. Dr. Berg was great. I took two grad classes from him and loved them both.

ND is a hot topic across the country. Just go to the western part of the state for starters. The east has enjoyed great growth (FM area) in the past and boasts an excellent economic climate and community as well. I will say that for the small minded, ND may not have their attention. That’s fine. However, ND athletics is on many people’s radar. I will say that I am EXTREMELY disappointed in UND Athletics’ photo of the flag, if that is the source for the Herald. Although the box was incorrectly addressed (NCAA fools!), that flag was not to be unrolled 1st by anyone from UND. I am a UND Hall of Famer, and if the roles would’ve been reversed – NDSU receiving our flag- I would be quite upset that they took even took it out of the box. That is a coveted flag; many hours of sweat equity went into getting it, and even though NDSU is (was???) a rival of ours, there is a certain level of respect that should be in place. Now I’m sitting here thinking…if the Bison ever have an opportunity to play UND, will they consider it? Seriously, they’re packing their dome with 15,000+ fans each FB game. Do they really need to play us? They’re still remembering the comments made by UND Athletics when they went D-1. Where are the Bison now…and where are we? I will always be a Fighting Sioux, but lets raise the bar here. We just got through an extremely controversial and costly name situation. We don’t need anymore bad press.

You’re probably right. The money goes to hockey. But let’s face it: In the real world of college football, NDSU’s title has all the significance of winning the Little League World Series.

Hate to say it, but the LLWS probably gets better ratings on ESPN than the FCS championship and the Frozen Four combined. So, maybe we shouldn’t throw rocks at glass houses. Just saying.
That said, I hope UND fans (especially students) start supporting the football team now too. It would be pretty cool to hang an FCS Championship banner in the Alerus (or a renovated Memorial Stadium because indoor football is horrible)

“Hate to say it, but the LLWS probably gets better ratings on ESPN than the FCS championship and the Frozen Four combined.”
No doubt. Neither NDSU nor UND seem to realize how unimportant their football and hockey teams, respectively, are. When the former starts scheduling Alabama, Oklahoma, and Ohio St, maybe they’ll get some recognition. As for the latter, it will never generate nation-wide interest. That FF games end up on ESPNU and the championship on ESPN2, much like lacrosse, just shows this.

A ring of truth in that but do not forget many consider the FBS a total joke. they cant even play for the championship the bowl games are all about money not a team earning a real championship. I dont follow them at all because of it, they should rename it the “Opinion bowl”.

As a perennial UND student I was always embarrassed by the low turn out for non male hockey events. Football tickets were basically free and you still couldn’t fill the stands more than 1/4 full and women’s hockey, which kicked arse this year and included two Olympians never got more than a two paragraph story on the second page.
I didn’t even know UND had a soccer team till I saw them practicing one day.
I do not know if the problem is with the students (me) or the university. That there is a problem is undeniable.

For all the concern about athletics at UND, and the huge expenditure on it. most students have no interest. Even hockey draws a relatively small percentage of the student population. Seems to attrack the old folks instead.

Yet you are the first ones in line to cry about the effects on the athletic programs for keeping the name. You said it yourself nobody attends UND sports besides men’s hockey. Now you have no nickname but the same lack of attendance problem.
Next you should just admit the sanctions were worthless and had no impact

Jackie I stand corrected. I forgot about number 3.
As for the semi alcoholic old farts who are too lazy to stand up and cheer their team … I already got in trouble over those distinguished members of the human race once this week already.
More students would attend hockey, if they could get tickets. Remember, the Ralph is all about money. It takes a lot to keep it open and there are many organizations who rely on its income. They reduce the number of student seats in order to increase the number of season tickets. A university may be for the students, put its sports palaces are for the bottom line.

I can tell you this was NOT the case back when UND was a perennial DIVISION 2 power in multiple sports other than hockey.
There may not have been much choice but to move up and to UND’s credit they resisted for awhile, but the desire to keep up with the Jones and play with the big boys comes with a cost!

Do we know when this really occurred–and when the Herald first found out about it? I would not be surprised at all if either one delayed reporting this given their actions in the nickname dispute.
The letter from the NCAA was dated May 23rd…A Wednesday. Assuming it didn’t get mailed until that friday, that’s still 2 1/2 weeks before the vote. How long does it take a package to go from Indiana to Grand Forks?

Excellent bit of investigation Tim. It does put the credibility of the GF Herald into question. They either sat on the story or they are to inept to report on it accurately. That is as low as it gets in journalism.

The article says the package arrived on Wednesday. Which 2 weeks is a little bit too long. There should be a tracking number associated with the package but I doubt we will ever see that number. My assumption is Faison lied about when the package arrived. It wouldn’t surprise me I said along time he is a untrustworthy snake in the grass

Yea, kind of how the Big 10 sees the U of M. Big 10 teams that play the Goph’s pretty much end up leaving with points in the win column……you can name your sport. I think the Goph’s knew a little more about NDSU after the Bison whooped up on them. I don’t think MN has much to say about noteriety and excellence in their athletic teams….do you?

Gopher football hasn’t done anything since Murray Warmath. The last couple decades they started scheduling creampuff teams to get a .500 record; enough to make it to a bowl game. Then the creampuffs started winning. As for success, this year the women won the hockey title, men got to the FF, wrestlers placed second behind Penn St.

While I agree, and have criticized UND’s expenditures on sports, you have to face it, the U of M has way more money to throw around. It paid New Mexico St 1.6 million for 2 football games. Paid NDSU 350K. Built a new football stadium. Is now buiding a new baseball field. Doesn’t matter they chronically cry poverty to the MN Legislature.

I can see the TCF Bank Stadium right now. It’s a massive structure. It’s in an odd place but that is how it is in the big city. And the University of Minnesota campus is on both sides of the Mississippi River. UND students should never complain about getting around on campus. They have it easy.

The irony here is all the people who voted yes on measure 4 just got hood winked by the university into thinking the NCAA had a legitimate concern about what was going on in north Dakota. I guess we still have chance in November maybe this will finally open your eyes that UND cares more about money from d1 then it cares about the heritage of our state.

This is the first time I’ve checked out this “news” piece. There’s lot’s of pent-up anger and outright hate here. Holy crap!! I tell you what, though, the recent ND election proved to me that a huge majority of voters is not this angry, jealous, greedy and difficult. The simple act of some clerk sending a package to the wrong school has brought out the dogs. It’s actually a little bizarre, don’t you think? I’m thankful that 98% of the population likely agrees with me.

I’m going to assume you meant, “you’re so smart,” but I didn’t make myself very clear when I mentioned the election. But, if there’s an NDSU banner issue on the November ballot, there’ll probably be a record turnout. My 98% comment was more about people being nice, not how they voted on a particular measure.
