Election officials won’t bar Fighting Sioux gear from Cass County polls

Cass County election officials say they’re going to try to let the little things slide on Election Day, particularly when it comes to passionate voters weighing in on the statewide Fighting Sioux nickname measure. Continue Reading

I think this is a non-issue. Most folks have made up their mind long before they go to the voting precinct. My prediction- “Yes” wins getting about 60% (a “super majority”, of the total.

Scooter: It might be a nonissue, but to a crew of election judges trying to do a good job, knowing this ahead of time is very helpful.

Good to see that Cass officials will not be making a mountain out of this mole hill. People are entirely sick of this issue. This thing easily passes. Al Carlson take note…we’re coming for you next!

Not sure that gear should be allowed. I do think it could be prejudicial.
Of greater interest to me is why the UND Alumni foundation has openly refused to name the large $$ donors to their cause to defeat the nickname for athletics reasons. Or why the Grand Forks Herald chose to name very contributor and the amount the contributed to the group working to retain the name!
It’s not often you see a public institution refuse to name donors to a poltical campaign and a major newspaper has zero problems with that!
Who are these people that UND and the Herald are scared of naming?

I voted early and as you already know voted no. I also wore my Sioux baseball cap. Not in defiance of voting laws but I only own fighting Sioux baseball caps. I would agree though that somebody showing up in a hockey sweater or leather coat is going outside the lines. The only time I wear my sweater is to games.

First, the UND Alumni Association is not a “public institution.” Second, their filing requirements are different from a sponsoring committee’s. You can find the relevant laws in the Century Code or on the Secretary of State’s Web page. Third, the Herald asked several times for the names of donors to the alumni campaign, and will continue to seek that information, and the Herald has reported repeatedly on the financial advantage the association has in this fight. Afraid? Give me a break.

Meant the above in response to Mr. Richardson, of course.

Tell you what Chuck, whether UND is hiding behind a law or not, you are on a slippery slope here!
If you are right, a law is being used to work around election donation transparency laws. What’s to stop them from contributing money towards the campaign of whoever runs against Al Carlson? And claiming they don’t have to name who they got the money from, or how much that was?
Recalling some of my UND education, I know what Ronald Pynn would say!
