New Oil Patch resident dives into N.D. politics
June 10, 2012 at 5:49 pm in Grand Forks Herald
Cincinnati native takes taxes very seriouslyOne of Williston, N.D.’s most visible Measure 2 supporters lives in an RV and has never paid property taxes in the state. But Palmer Reising said just because he’s from Ohio doesn’t mean he and other newcomers to North Dakota are second-class citizens. Continue Reading

His stance on property taxes in North Dakota is distorted at two junctures. First he claims it is “my responsibility to be informed ” but apparently he hasn’t asked many North Dakotans or understand how local control (e.g. at the township level) works and is viewed in North Dakota. Second, basing his viewpoint on the problems his mother is having in Ohio is also incorrect. He should know more about North Dakota before imposing his particular viewpoint on this state’s citizens.

He’s a good example of the far-right zealots who have been attracted to this extreme measure. I bet he’s also a member of the tea party.

So because his views aren’t yours, you extrapolate a supposition and then call him names.. nice.

I didn’t call him a name. I described him as accurately as I could using standard English. The word “zealot” is not pejorative; it’s descriptive.

It is both. A beauty in the eye of the beholder thing.
I don’t have a problem with the term but many might consider it “inflammatory.”

Hey, who’re you calling “gun-hating”? My freezer is full of self-harvested meat. Your stereotypes don’t fit here or anywhere.

That is the great thing about the United States.. Everyone has a voice, he lives here and his vote counts just as much as yours does.. What do you want to eliminate people who rent from voting next?

Cannot quite tell if you replying to my comment or realist. If replying to mine, I could say if I were a strict constitutional constructionist, historically only property owners could vote. I am not suggesting or approve of that restriction and he meets all the requirements to vote in North Dakota. However, many who come from other states are not familiar with the local and township level governance of North Dakota. I am merely pointing out that he may or may not have been here long enough to understand our local issues. As to the township where I reside, I already know that 100% of the residents are voting against the measure because we don’t trust the state to do the right thing for our roads and schools.

More than a few people on these boards have suggested just that. I guess they skipped over “poll taxes” being unconstitutional when they were in High School.

Many in our own state do not understand it is the STATE who controls most of the property tax, they tell us how many mills, how we assess property, how farm land is assess, they train the assessors, they set the time when a property is foreclosed on. The only thing local government does is added it all up and tell us to pay the tax than the local boards spend it.

Welcome to North Dakota, Mr. Reising. And thanks for getting involved. We need more shakers and movers.

My thanks also. Thank god the people who are voting no on measure 2 were not around when the Declaration of Independence and U. S. Constitition were drawn up. We would still be a colony. With there sky is falling the sky is falling attitude. VOTE YES.

I’m not that sure we need another guy who’s willing to steal candy from kids to try and make political points. It would have been kind of funny though if someone had pulled out some pepper spray while he was threatening the children and let him have it.

This story highlights the double edged sword that is voting in ND. We have some of the least restrictive voting laws in the nation. I think that is a tremendous strength. I hope no one does anything to change that.
While reading this story my first thought was: how long before someone latches on to the fact he is not from here, does not pay property taxes here, and yet is participating in a drive that does not directly affect him?
Enfranchisement = good. Disenfranchisement = bad.

Reising has every right to say and do what he is doing, and those of us who don’t like what he is saying and doing have every right to tell him that too. (I am not sure he had the right to steal candy from babies, however. I like the pepper spray suggestion.)
