The NCAA will meet next week to discuss the possibility of allowing visors in men’s college hockey next season. An NCAA study showed that 83 percent of college hockey players preferred a three-quarter visor, which covers the nose and cheek bones. Regarding this issue of using visors instead of cages to protect the face, just ask New Jersey Devils Anton Volchenkov. In last nights Stanley Cup game between the Devils and the Kings, Mr. Volchenkov was the victim of an unintentional stick to the face that looked like it required a number of stiches to his upper lip. It was and is a very ugly injury. This injury did not result in a penalty as it was a follow-through of either a pass or a shot, as the video replay showed. There have been a number of puck injuries to the lower face as well, just during the playoffs. Point is, visors do not prevent the kind of injuries full face cages do. My vote would be to stay with the cages. But of course, I have no vote!

As long it’s a badge of honor among hockey players to be missing their front teeth, a switch to a visor at the college level will simply put the players ahead of the game.
