Duluthian creates app that attracts fish with underwater sounds

Greg Bambenek remembers as a kid going out on the Mississippi River with his dad, putting out set lines for flathead catfish. In a rowboat, the two would set out 50 baits, all suspended from one long cord. When the last one was baited and dropped, Bambenek’s dad, a commercial fisherman, would always whack the water with a paddle.

David: Why would it be outlawed? It can’t be no different than a duck or goose call!
I congratulate this angler if it works!

Tim, I think David’s point is that if it works to well, it will be banned since people will be taking to many fish. Even if they stay within the limits, if most every fisherman were to fill out his/her limit while fishing….the DNR will in short order ban the device from being used.

Jessica,
I am the manufacturer of the TalkWithFish app and underwater speaker.
I feel your fears of overfishing the resource are unfounded.
The DNR carefully controls and changes fish limits and slot sizes to ensure an enjoyable, sustainable sport for everyone. Fishing products such as mine and others like the underwater camera and sonar are scientific devices that improve the fishing experience, especially for children. They learn more about animal behavior, communication and our place in the shared ecosystem with these devices.
Fishing is a family oriented, outdoor sport, with good food as a result. If your fears regarding overfishing are a result of Green Peace’s media, remember, they regard hook and line fishing as the only sustainable type of fishing, regardless of the devices.
Learning about animals is part of this. Thirty years ago I had to teach fishermen that fish could smell, and very well, even if underwater. We are now learning that fish communicate with sounds, and very well. It’s educational to communicate with them, in their alien world, using all of our senses.
