Sioux nickname supporters travel state to spread message
June 7, 2012 at 1:15 pm in Grand Forks Herald
FARGO Traffic was slow in the Buffalo Wild Wings parking lot Thursday morning, slow to nothing, actually, in terms of people stopping by to visit or sign a petition. But that didn’t mean Eunice Davidson, an advocate for UND to keep its Fighting Sioux nickname, wasn’t busy. The vote is just days away. Continue Reading

I like Eunice. I wish her well. I completely disagree with her but I respect her. She is a worthy opponent. She brings a grace to the. Discussion that is usually missing

Too bad the Native Americans didn’t stand up to this fight about five years ago. Too little too late, but thanks anyway. Time to vote yes.
Hot debate. What do you think?

“But the dignity of the Sioux people is paramount.” Tell that to all the Native Americans, Standing Rock Council, and other who have voiced their strong opinion over the past years and decades as to how the racist and hostile were paramount. I understand her and the SL “Name first, UND second” opinion, but it isn’t fear and exaggeration that is the basis of the support needed for the UND. It is irrefutable harm, the essence of which is being experienced presently. To say otherwise is flat out wrong. Let the votes be cast based upon facts not fiction. Support the UND. Vote Yes on Measure 4 and end this convoluted controversy in which fellow tribal members can not agree.

It’s not about what HAS been lost but its about what WILL BE lost. Lets start with hockey games against Minnesota and Wisconsin. And how about football games with Minnesota? Do you realize we are the only one of the 4 major universities in the Dakotas that Minnesota hasn’t scheduled in football? Agree with their convoluted reasoning or not, its a fact of life. Lets talk about the Big Sky. They have avoided any direct threats to boot us out just to be polite, but it doesn’t take a genius to read between the lines. Are you “no” supporters that delusional?

Always: please do not keep bringing up arguments that have already been refuted numerous times. Circle jerks are appropriate in Jr High but not afterwords.

Saying the only minimal harm to the UND is that they will have to wear different uniforms is as senseless, and wrong, as saying nothing will change. Totally untrue. And these typically false statements only hurt the No advocates cause because it is so obviously false. To deny is the most simplest form of argument….and totally implausible. It’s based on the obvious denial of the facts. Pure head-in-the-sand. If I was the leader of the SL effort, I’d tell these people to STOP HELPING! If you are disassociated from the UND, of course, you see no harm. That is the stance of the SL people, which is understandable and respected because they have steadfastly been Name first, UND second since the day the SL Council agreed to support the name as requested by the NCAA. SL effort only cares about the name. So they write the harm off as something trivial. Everyone understands their sentiment because it is genuine. But It is not trivial to the UND and those who care about the UND. It is real, the effects of which have already been realized and is well documented in every associated report. If you care about the UND, UND First, Name Second, you recognize and appreciate the serious harm that is taking place and will take place, and you will Vote YES on Measure 4 to respectfully retire the name.

I have a lot of Respect for Eunice Davidson. Her “kindly, soft spoken” demeanor under fire speaks volumes on where the “Truth” lies.
UND graduate, Doug Benson’s statement that he’s “heard the warnings about the sanctions and the future of UND athletics” “It’s a concern” “BUT The dignity of the Sioux people is Paramount.” Is well stated and says it all. It is the very thing that the leaders at UND , the NCAA and some ND Officials have closed their eyes to and makes me feel ashamed of all in these leadership positions that should have, and could have, handled this issue much differently.
Vote “No”.

As questionable as I believe your statement is, it should be clarified that along with UND, the NCAA and ND officials, you conveniently forgot to mention the many Native Americans, the Standing Rock Council and others who have fought consistently over the years and decades to eliminate the name (apparently not so paramount) and were influential in getting the NCAA to adopt a non-racist policy. No one closed their eyes except to weep at the loss of a such a great name due to the lack of solidarity among the two relevant tribal councils. Now that the opportunity has been lost, as bitter as it has been for the UND and all those associated with the UND, the only option for the greater good and growth of the UND is to move on by Voting YES and respectfully retiring the name as the once pivotal SR Council so desires.

We are all originally indigenous. At a time when the planet is dying we need connections to our roots as a species imbedded in a sacred natural worldview. The image of the native in UND athletics is a small but powerful connection to that world. The radical chic attitudes of the scientific elites that inform our common modern attitudes has reinforced the neo liberal capitalist economic system which sees athletics as a business even @ the college level. Yes the NCAA sanctions probably will be used by opposing college recruiters to lure prize blue chip athletes from UND. The rationale to rid UND of the name makes sense as long as the real connection to our common heritage as a species is repressed. The BIG SKY we so desire to be a part of has nothing to do with the real meaning of a “big sky”in our collective indigenous memories. In fact it seems modern culture needs to destroy any vestige of our connection to a world view that has the potential to help us reconnect to what can save the planet from our desires “to consume freely”. Our memories of our tribal past are unacceptable to us as our love for a modern but destructive way of life takes on more influence every day. The “consuming freely” aliens on Saturday Night Live are an accurate caricature of who we have become in place of the noble Sioux we really all are. That natural world we need to recapture is as alien to us as any alien world is. As much as I admire the goals of the American Indian Movement I believe they also have given up on the need to connect to our roots as reflected in the comments made by the Native lawyer @ Standing Rock & Eric Longie et al about the stereotype created by the Sioux name & logo that portrays Natives as something they are not about anymore. If only we could all recognize that it is in fact that ancient image so beautifully described by the logo’s artist who we need to be more of instead of less if we are to survive as a species.
