Property tax is a tetchy subject esp when rich companies are getting a rebate but NEEDS MUST as they say. Just wonder if property taxes in themselves are the biggest impediment to luring companies to Minnesota and therefore, Duluth. A voice inside me says no. So how can Minnesota better incentivise a scheme to lure companies to the state? Duluth can only do what is within its means to do – the state must legislate on most things. Some states offer incentive packages that exempt sales tax on all new equipment purchases. Should that not be something that Duluth area legislators should push for in St Paul? Let’s strengthen existing business while we’re at it – New Page and Georgia Pacific, Epicurean, ME Global, Kuettel. While we’re at it – let’s not limit it to manufacturing equipment. Computers and office furniture are just as vital to engineering and service-based industries as heavy machinery is to manufacturers. If Duluth and Minnesota doesn’t do it, other cities and states will. Let’s face it – companies aren’t knocking doors down to come to Duluth.

I was hoping for more readers’ comments on the subject. On further reflection, I am reluctant to advance the sales tax exemption idea because I am reminded of Diamond Tool & Horseshoe in the 80s when they were sold and moved to South Carolina. If I remember correctly, they removed the tools and dies from the West End plant.
I half-expected a reader to lambast me on here for making the recommendation.
Nobody reading remembers?
