Reader’s view: Time once again to save Big Chester

Five years ago Duluth’s parks department announced it was considering removing the historic Chester Park ski jumps and surrounding facilities. In a commentary for the News Tribune, I called for the city to not be too hasty in its decisions. Others wrote letters and still more showed up to a meeting of the parks board. Legendary Duluth ski jumper Jim A. Denney, along with his son Jim J., proposed a plan to save the jumps. The parks board passed it unanimously.

A wonderful letter to begin talking points on the issue. Too often, northern Minnesota is losing it’s heritage because newer generations just don’t care. Save the jumps, save the Viking ship and quit spending money on pipe dreams like high speed rail, which likely will never come about and likely will not be used by people. Maybe the Link family can step forward and make some suggestions on how we save our treasures and quit peeing money away on pipe dreams.
