Talk of closing fire hall sparks dissent on Park Point
May 16, 2012 at 7:00 pm in Duluth News Tribune
Duluth Fire Chief John Strongitharm will face a tough room in the Lafayette Community Center tonight when he meets with Park Point residents to explain why the city is looking at closing the fire station that has served their neighborhood for decades.

How in the world can any fire employee say they’ll still be protected?? No ONE can predict when that bridge is going to be up, and if it’s up, with a HUGE freighter right at the end of the pier, it’s NOT coming down for at least another 6-8 minutes, or more. I’m glad I no longer have any family members living down there now, but my heart still goes out to the poor residents that live down there!

That’s right Julie. It was years ago that I heard the statistic but as I recall, under normal conditions a home fire will double in size every 3 minutes. An 8 minute (minimum) delay as you mention will make a small fire into a structure-losing fire. Perhaps Park Pointers should organize and staff a volunteer fire department for their own safety.

Raise your hand if you are tired of hearing the non stop complaining from Park Pointers! Does it stink that the Station 5 might be closed? Yes. Is it a nasty reflection of the rough times? Yes. Did all of the Park Pointers make a conscious decision to move there? You betcha! If you don’t like it then find a new home. It is an honor and a privilege to live on the point. I know because I used to. Here’s a thought: instead of spending all of your money on fancy cars and updating your over the top homes how about you make a donation to improve the fire hall and hire another firefighter to work there. Actually take action instead of just flap your gums. I realize that is a foreign idea to the pointers. All you Pointers do is moan and complain about anything and everything. How about just enjoying for a minute the fact that you live in one of the most beautiful areas in the world!

I laughed so hard at the use of “dissent” in the tweet about this story. Like a bunch of PAWPs (Pampered *** White People) are going to take up torches & pitchforks against this.
As to the calls for service, 4:5 are medical? I’m betting more like 4.999999999, and most of those are probably the nursing homes for medical calls that FD can do nothing about, since you know, those people are usually standing at death’s door.
Once again though, this just shows that people want Duluth’s finances run better, until of course it affects them. Which from the sounds of it, it probably wouldn’t anyways.
Oh and solution to the nursing homes: Train several employees per shift as First Responders (though I don’t understand what one could do that an RN couldn’t) who can work to treat a patient til Gold Cross arrives.

“Earlier this week, Mackay spoke before the Duluth City Council about the hefty property taxes paid on waterfront property. Residents presented a petition with 636 signatures demanding that the fire station stay open.”
If they want it, pony up some more money. There is a cost associated to living in certain parts of town, and this is one of them.

The point is the money is already being paid. Lots of money. more money per capita than any other part of town.
