Big upgrade awaits 50th Avenue

A major upgrade is in the works for 50th Avenue in south Alexandria.
City leaders say it will make the road safer, match it up with an existing wider section of the road, and provide better access to the new high school that will open in 2014. Continue Reading

Seems like an overbuilt waste of money. That section of 50th carries only about 4000 vehicles a day. Even after the school is built it won’t get anywhere close to the threshold for a 5-lane road. A 3-lane road could easily handle 4 times the current volumes and we’d save money on right-of-way and have a lower cost road for the land owners. Not a very good engineering decision in my opinion.

I agree with JP on this, unless there are big plans for development in those farm fields, it is a bit aggressive. If there are long term plans, then it probably would be cheaper to go big now versus reconfiguring later. Last year there was talk about a new I-94 exit further East, if that were to dump on to this road that could be another argument for it being wider.

The city of Alex got what they wanted. A over priced high school and now a reason to “have” to develop the road at the cost of residents. Sad.
