Corps pulls lease for Lake Sakakawea Girl Scouts camp

The Girl Scouts will lose a lease for a summer camp facility northwest of Pick City, N.D., on Lake Sakakawea at the end of this year. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will terminate the lease for the 210-acre site because the camp is rarely used by Girl Scouts and more often by people who shouldn’t be using it. Continue Reading

I was a part of the Girl Scouts in Minot for several years and attended Core Camp held each summer at the Lake Sakakawea site five of those years. That was one of the highlights of the beginning of my summers as a young person. I have so many wonderful memories from my time at camp and gained so much from the activities that we got to do — archery, riflery, horseback riding, canoeing, and hiking. The first night was a song and skit night and the last night was a bonfire night. Not only was it a place where we could earn some of our badges, but it was also a place where girls could go where they were not judged, discriminated against, or made to feel less than adequate because they might have looked different or not as “pretty” as other girls. There was no “cattiness” or fighting. Everyone got along. It was one of the “safer” places young girls could go without fear of being made fun of.
It is sad to read that the lease will be lost. At least is will happen between camp seasons which will give the Girl Scouts time to find a new location. My only hope is that the camp will not be discontinued. Girls still need that “safe place” to go to.

Maybe there aren’t Scouts out there every weekend but I believe they still use it every year.
We are ending up with a big lake and no one is going to be allowed to go near it except at a few select locations.

So who, exactly “shouldn’t be using it”?
