Rising demand for student housing options that offer more privacy than traditional dormitories has launched a $9.8 million project at the University of Minnesota-Crookston and prompted UND to consider its own housing project. Continue Reading

This kind of unneeded luxury is a big part of the increase in cost of college. Give student the choice and build basic dorms offer them at the lower price they can command and you will never find an empty room. Do these students want an education or to live at the Ritz with a health spa?

Beginning with Kupchella UND made a concerted effort to spiral up both enrollment and tuition as a means of generating greater revenue streams. The dollar signs in their eyes must have blinded them to the fact that they didn’t have the infastructure to handle that many more students. The results are that many students have to rent houses and need six years to get a degree, seeing no new faculty lines were created.

Less than 1/3 of students live on campus at UND because the room, and required board, rates nearly exceed the cost of tuition.
Fall 2011 Rates: ND Resident Tuition Only: $3,545.78 – - – Triple Occupancy Dorm W/ Meal Plan: $3,039. Double Occupancy W/ Meal Plan: $3,266. *Meal Plan is Required.
The rough time you’re in a dorm is 9 months, that means you’re paying $725/month for ‘Rent’, elec/Heat, Water, TV/internet, and Food. If you were to take those $’s off campus (split by 2) Elec $30, Water $30, TV/internet: 60, Food (indv) ($50/wk):215, Leaving you and your roommate $390 each to pay towards an apartment that can be as expensive as $780/month. Added perks to off campus living: Private Bedroom, Kitchen, liquor, LIVING SPACE!
