At a time when government is falling under greater scrutiny it is even less heartening when the land grant colleges of Minnesota are also falling into question. With the severance package given to the former provost at UMD, it is an insult to the tax payers of the state who pay for new building construction and also to the students who are asked every year to pay more and more. The University has shown itself to be not accountable to anyone but itself least of all the public it serves. I have always taken for granted that the state universities would be representative of the best but now find that like in wall street greed has become a part ot the culture. .

Alumni giving is a crazy concept I’ve never understood. How many of us have contributed to executive severances, bloated retirement plans and million dollar legal settlements without our knowledge. Even President Obama recently asked the leadership of universities and colleges to hold down spending because it’s crushing the students they are supposed to be helping get ahead.
