Drive to stiffen animal cruelty laws cites beating death of Grand Forks dog
May 4, 2012 at 1:15 am in Grand Forks Herald
People working to increase North Dakota penalties against animal cruelty are citing the recent killing of a pet dog during a Grand Forks home invasion and robbery as an example of why the cruelty laws should be toughened. Continue Reading

The three creeps should be brought to justice and receive maximum sentences for their crime. While animal cruelty is unacceptable, let’s not forget about the real issue here, prescription drug abuse.

The way we treat our animals says a lot about who we are as a people.

Just throwing this out there but, as with a lot of legislation, how do you draw the line? Why just dogs, cats, and horses? Is this a pet issue or a general animal issue? I am a believer in punishing animal cruelty but legislation must be VERY carefully crafted so as to protect the animals, not overburden the justice system, and provide a reasonable punishment that is enforceable. Does anyone know why just those three animal types were selected?

Because nobody cares about the other animals enough to spend money for enforcement.

Because the last time something like this was offered to voters it was to broad and could have included things like livestock which are intended to be eaten.. It didn’t pass. So they have narrowed the scope to include only those animals that would be considered companions.

I consider this proposed law the bare minimum. The only thing it has going for it is that it’s way better than what we have now.

I totally agree…I would guess that the group just wanted to create something that they believed would actually pass.

“The coalition is circulating petitions for an initiated measure that would make it a Class C felony “to maliciously and intentionally harm a living dog, cat or horse.” ”
Would this then apply to pet owners who allow there dogs or cats out to roam freely throughout the city? And, say, they got hit by a car?

This is silly.. Don’t make a law after a law a that is already a law and other laws that cover the same law on the books today.. It’s a waste of taxpayers money.. Redundancy of the law will never stop these people.. Now look up the laws already in place.. A new law will not make a difference..

In Minnesota it is a felony if convicted of animal abuse. I wonder why this man was charged with a misdemeanor? The dog should have not been placed back into their home. I see no protection for this animal.
I agree just having a law does not detour one from committing a crime…but if one is convected at least they would face a stiffer penalty.

Murdering people still goes on regardless of the penalties.. A new law for pets will not make a difference.. People who kill will not care what laws are in place..

I don’t agree that all the men would be facing is a slap on the wrist. A year in jail is a pretty serious thing.
I doubt that they will get a year for killing the dog. Making it potentially more years wouldn’t likely make any difference either.
I understand that people want to see a greater penalty possible for egregious cases, I just don’t think this is really that type of case.
