UND associate men’s hockey coach Cary Eades let go
May 3, 2012 at 9:21 am in Grand Forks Herald
UND will not renew the contract of associate men’s hockey coach Cary Eades, who won two national championships as a player and one as an assistant coach with the school. Continue Reading

Cary seems more than ready to assume a head coaching position somewhere. With all the conference changes especially, I’m thinking that he will be running another program – maybe one of the current CCHA teams – that will be coming into the WCHA. Good luck coach!

So now that Hakstol has a new 6-year contract, watch as brings in former players of his to make those 6-figure salaries.

Actually, this is all pretty clear. Eades becomes the scapegoat for the lack of playoff success of the hockey team. It takes the onus off of Hakstol, and allows him to hire a former player who couldn’t make it in the NHL. Lucia did the same thing a few years ago, except he fired the wrong guy. He brought him back and the Gophs got to the Frozen Four, after miserable previous seasons.

Lack of playoff success? Ummm pretty sure the WCHA playoffs count as playoffs and they’ve been quite successful, they’ve made how many frozen 4′s? Those were playoffs to get there. Any idea how long it took Jerry York at BC or Red Berenson at Michigan to win a national title. I like coach Eades a lot, both as a coach & as a player- I don’t see him being used as a scape goat at all. Sometimes a staff for whatever reason needs a change up. This doesn’t diminish coach Hak in my eyes nor does it dimi

Nor does it diminish my view of coach Eades. Thanks for all you’ve done and my very best wishes in your future endeavors.

You bring up some rational points. But UND fan[atics] aren’t rational. Success to them is what Hakstol has never delivered: the whole enchilada. How many have clamored for his head the last three years, when he couldn’t bring the NCAA banner home? Eades is the first victim of this. If Hakstol and his agent had any sense, there will be a big buy-out clause in his contract if UND gets tired of waiting for that banner.

That’ll teach him to apply for a coaching position at Mankato. Try to jump ship–get fired instead.

I’m sorry to see him go. I interacted with Coach Eades numerous times on academic issues (good ones – not bad) and always found him to be one of the best people. We’re losing a good man.

“Eades was told about it prior to the American Hockey Coaches Association convention in Florida, which took place during the last week in April.” If he was told about it before the last week of April, you sure couldn’t tell anything was changing by the tone of his twitter messages. No twittering since May 1 though. Surprised CE even went to those meetings. He was also at the WCHA coaches meetings.

They got rid of the wrong coach. Chokestol needs to go. I guess we have six more years of playoff flameouts to enjoy.

Eades has showed a lot of class in his current situation. I do not know the details leading to his release but it smells pretty bad. Hakstol recieves a significant pay raise and his right hand man gets the shaft. Those are the only details we know right now. I am hoping eades already has another coaching position lined up. If not he shouldn’t have a problem finding one.

I’ll reiterate what I said above: Hakstol is going to stock the team with coaches selected from the ranks of his former players. The downside of this form of incest is that nothing will change as regards the teams playing style (“We always have done it this way.”) Even though that style has never won a championship.

Not sure we’ll ever know the truth and I don’t buy the explanation.
They’ve had some issues with prospects heading off mighty early, and injuries have limited their talent a bit, so perhaps it’s related to recruiting.
Cary was a good one though. Decent guy and hard working player back in the day that probably had a longer pro career waiting until he was injured. Wish him the best, and am certain he will land on his feet.
There are some former Sioux players I would look at as a replacement. Brad Berry would top my list. He has a lot of experience coaching at all levels (last I heard I think he was back in the NHL coaching ranks), including a number of pretty darn productive years for the Sioux–and as an Alberta boy might be able to help with recruiting. Good perspective on the nickname issue too…:-)

As a hockey fan and someone who grew up here playing against hockey teams that Eades coached while in Warroad, I think its a good thing for UND. Eades like to win, no doubt about it, and his record at the high school level and with UND is impressive. Where Eades struggles is in sportsmanship. All the way back to the water bottle incidemt with Wisco, this is the way he plays and coaches. His coaching style often deserves the name “goon” and in the long run, I don’t think its good for UND. We already have one of the worst reps in the league and some of it is deserved.

“Where Eades struggles is in sportsmanship”
So Hakstol simply forgot to use the right finger when he signaled “We’re Number 1″ to the refs?
