OUR OPINION: Fine weather highlights Red River’s canoeing potential

The Red River is a spectacular canoeing river slow and peaceful on most days, with lots of wildlife and little development along its banks.
But it lacks one vital amenity: namely, well-spaced canoe landings.
North Dakota should change that. Continue Reading

Good Idea, but first let’s think safety….the Red needs maintenance to remove ‘dead heads’ all the trees and such that cannot be seen because of the brackish water. The story just the other day of the kids fishing pointed out that they were losing hooks because their lines were getting snagged. It would be impossible to clean out every hazardous thing under the water, but this river has not been dredged or cleaned of debris for at least 50 years. With the possible chance of someone maybe going overboard, until most of the hang ups underwater that could snag someone and hamper a safe recovery, promoting many users on the river my not be the safest plan.
If we get back to maintaining the river for recreation and with all the ‘green’ space in our bordering parks, maybe the city of GF would consider going back to campsites like they had in the 50′s and 60′s in our parks. Our local camping areas are usually full…people like to camp close to cities where they have options other than just recreation. In GF campers could have access to bike paths, canoeing, fishing, golf, as well as restaurants, movie theaters, shopping, etc.
The city should not be done making lemonade or even slowing down….the possibilities are endless.
