Ultimately, this pattern of under-investment will cripple the state’s most powerful economic engine while shifting even more of the financing burden to students and their families. Continue Reading

I can’t speak to UMC, but I get a kick out the poverty proclaimed by the U of M Twin Cities when it:
builds a new football stadium
pays is baskeball coach over a million
pays its new AD $400K+
pays New Mexico St $1.6 million for 2 football games and NDSU $350K for one
How much does UMC blow on athletics?

It would be extremely unfortunate if Crookston closed. It is needed in that area of the state. The only other choices are the Twin Cities or UND.
That said, the people of MN have some very tough decisions to make, the first of which is can it afford its present system? That is for the people of MN to decide, but like any other business, when you do not have enough money, you close stores. Trying to keep everything open simply dilutes resources to the point that everyone suffers.
As I said, I hope UMC is not closed. I think it is needed and can provide a valuable resource to the region. But that is not my decision. The people of MN need to decide what type of university sytem they want

This is the usual cliché-ridden stuff university administrators come up with when it looks like a revenue stream may be reduced…or mor likely, not increased. Notice that among all the “worries” he has for UMC, sports is not among them; i.e., sports will continue to thrive. It’s indicative that at even a hole in the wall like UMC, sports reigns supreme.
