The improved diet will probably cause some waste until kids get used to a healthier life style. My only concern portion size for age and sex. For example, putting the same food on the plate for a 13 year old girl (who is probably as tall as she’s going to get) and a 16 year old boy (who’s bulking up for football)have different needs. The article did say the’d use age, but that’s usually only been by grade – elementary, middle school, high school and kids grow at different rates. I like the premise of this new diet but it will be a challenge.

IMHO it will only help if the healthy diet as they see it is also reinforced at home. If children and young adults have developed poor eating habits throughout their lives they will find it difficult to change especially if there is no support at home.
I would love to see young people develop good eating habits from a very young age but I also refuse to accept the goverment interferring with parental rights. So, feed them good with the lunch programs, let them throw away what they don’t want to eat and hope for the best.
And don’t forget something not so good for you should be included occasionally too.

Ya know Elton, when the kids are pre-school age, we have complete control over what they eat. Their main diet is milk, fruits and veggies. Meat is added after a while and junk food doesn’t exist…only an occasional treat (crackers, cookie etc). Then they go to school and are offered crap – sweet & fatty crap. The good choices were offer at home become a battle. I think its time the school reinforced what the parents began.

Parents have control over what they eat. The main diet should be milk, fruits and veggies but if you spend anytime with people who are less then good parents you will find the children drinking artificial fruit juice instead of milk and being feed crap if they are being feed at all.
The schools have done a terrible job managing what they present to the children in schools. Machines that dispense candy and sodas, pizza available everyday, chocolate milk available everyday, junk food available to purchase and on and on and on….. way too many options most of which are unhealthy and unnecessary.

So I think we actually agree here – believe it or not. I do see parents feeding kids junk – not sure they are terrible parents or uneducated parents. Unfortunately, the 100 juice and healthier options cost more and sometimes the labels are misleading. But in the end – its still good for kids if they become aware of healthy choices at school. They are taught about the food groups and better standards have replaced the old pyramid. So now the schools will practice what they teach in the cafeteria.

Yes Nora we do agree here mostly because the information in the article and that you posted is not pulled out of thin air like so many other comments made on this site.
Do you find it interesting like I do that even though we are in agreement people are disliking my comments at about the same rate as they are liking your comments? It does speak volumes doesn’t it.

And as for the topic, this is the most likely outcome of the previous regulations.
