Rukavina letter threatens Pequaywan Township over mining vote
April 19, 2012 at 7:00 pm in Duluth News Tribune
State Rep. Tom Rukavina says he was only about half serious when he sent a scolding letter to the Pequaywan Township board threatening to take away the township’s share of taconite tax money after town supervisors voted for a resolution critical of copper mining.

Calling Tommy a clown… is an insult to clowns. Fixed that for you.

I really believe his time has passed – I always run leery of politicians, school teachers, and coaches who outlive their effectiveness but are unwilling to consider the possibility.

“We aren’t anti-mining. We just want to make sure it is done right”… i.e., – we are all for it as long as it is done as far away from us as possible.

That may be true, but Rukie’s response amounts to nothing more than extortion. Completely inappropriate response from a legislator who is supposed to represent ALL constituents and listen to ALL in his district – regardless of his cronies.

When you consider his interference with the county land sale in Virginia, his temperament is more suited for a mafia enforcer than an elected representative.

I’m tired of the pro-mining folks, and the media, using anti-mining to describe those opposed to sulfide mining. It’s time to start using anti-water instead of pro-mining. Equal treatment.
Rep. Rukavina isn’t alone with the threats. David Oliver of Duluth Metals threatened several members (opposed to sulfide mining) of a lake association – by naming them at a public meeting and telling the lake association it should kick them out of its membership ranks because the individuals made the association look bad; look “anti-mining.”
This same lake association, whose mission is to protect its waters, was threatened with losing support of its county commissioners if the association was perceived as being “anti-mining.”
Can’t be much more anti-water than that.

For the record, the Ely sulfide mining resolution passed by four votes, and St. Louis County by one. Sulfide-mining District or Lake District? That is the question.
