With a second methadone treatment center for opiate addicts in Duluth about two months from opening, according to its director, another group hopes to open one as well.

Very sad, but not suprising in a town where the main industry promoted seems to be poverty.

Whether you intended to or not you just implied that all drug addicts are black.

I implied that all addicts are black? Hmmm – white, black, red, yellow, brown are all colors as far as I know.
Oh, the irony is thick!;

I wonder if anyone realizes how many “drug incidents” and police calls happen at these clinics? Check out crimemapping.com and see the umber of calls to the current clinic and the continuous ruckus this causes to a neighborhood. Police have their hands full already..adding another one of these trouble spots is not the answer. Most of these businesses are in business for making money – not for helping people. If I would trust anyone with the job, it would be a group that currently provides alcohol treatment with a good track record and long term ties to our community (Center for Drug and Alcohol Treatment) rather than another unknown private for profit company coming. And Mike W… who said anything about race? Sometimes it feels like people waive the color card just to get a fight going. I am pretty sure addiction is shared by all colors. People not wanting another clinic of this type in another Duluth neighborhood has nothing to do with color and everything to do with the effect (police calls) that go hand in hand with this type of clinic. Research the calls and how it pulls our police force away from other calls (increasing our taxes as the calls increase for more police needs) -

EB, to help you see through the entire issue, in addition to color I should have added sex, sexual orientation, religion, culture, economic status, ethnic background, etc, etc, etc – the irony here is that potential clients come from all walks of life with regard to these variables – NIMBY’rs just want them to stay away from their neighborhoods, cities, states, or countries “for their own good”. Addiction hits all people across all of these variables and many more too – methadone clinics are around to help people in a safer, more controlled environment than your typical heroin-jazzed dangerous sub-culture – not that all heroin users exist in dangerous heroin-jazzed sub-cultures btw. Addiction(illicit drugs, alcohol, tobacco, etc) is a product of the society we live in – it is our responsibility to reach out and attempt to help, no matter the race, sex, orientation, etc, etc, etc of those affected. But popular opinion casts the stereotypical addict as a burden on our society – an eyesore – that rises from the typically lower-income, unemployed minority populations. Bull – addiction affects everyone. Everyone.

I noticed the other story about the clinic not being welcomed is removed from the comments…wonder why?
The fact is, most of those that are sent to these clinics are not from the area the clinics are located in. The clients [?], besides the drug treatment, needs to be relocated to new areas, because another main part of treatment is getting them out of the current enviroment and friends they hang with. So where ever these clinics are located, residents can expect to have new neighbors with questionable back grounds and histories. It is far from not uncommon, that these people will also become part of the social services that area gives. More than a few, of not most, will end up with being supported by the taxpayiing public in the long run. That means, housing, food, health care, transportation, education, and all the other social programs that go with it.
Call it being a NIMBY all you want, but I sure wouldn`t want one anywhere near me or mine.
I sugest they put these clinics into the better well to do neighborhoods, where the bleeding hearts live and play. That way they can help rehabilitate on a daily basis by allowing the clients at the clinic to see how their lives can be inriched through that example.
My guess…..you`ll never see even a after treatment group home in one of THOSE neighborhoods, because they would rather see it in yours instead.
Just my opinion…………..But I`d bet on it!

It’s interesting that the same group that runs the wet house (San Marco apts) now wants to open a methadone clinic. On one hand, they say they want to ease addiction, but on the other, the enable it. What gives, other than somebody found another way to fleece the taxpayer.
Hot debate. What do you think?

For the love of God, I hope the new high-speed train stops at the new methadone clinic.

Hey… the present clinic and the new one could have sing-alongs… they keep trotting the addicts out to different events like organ grinder monkeys and we’re supposed to clap for them…
