Dalrymple to ask Obama for housing help on N.D. reservations

Gov. Jack Dalrymple plans to write a letter to President Barack Obama to ask for help addressing the housing needs on North Dakota reservations. During a news conference here Tuesday with Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, Dalrymple said Federal Emergency Management Agency trailers brought in to help Minot after last summer’s flooding should go to the Fort Berthold and Turtle Mountain reservations after the Minot families move out. Why can’t we come together as a community and build the housing. The reservation shouldn’t be treated differently. We need to come together as a state.

This needs to be run like a Habitat For Humanity project. Those that help, get houses first. Just handing them over to the residents of the reservation without them lifting a finger just insures they’re going to strip the house of copper and plumbing fixtures and sell them for booze. It’s how it’s always been. I remember when they moved trailer houses into Fort Totten, they lasted about a year before they were destroyed.

Aren’t reservations considered “sovereign nations?” They should ask the UN for money.
